Context and commentary on verse 5.28
The sentence of the last verse ends here. ‘From whom desire, fear and anger have gone’ recalls the second chapter’s description of the one of steady wisdom as ‘free from passion, fear and anger’. Desire, fear and anger come together like three branches of one root.
Shankara reads ‘ever free’ thus: such a renunciate is always free, and nothing else remains for him to do for liberation. For Sridhara Swami he is free while still living.
Ramanuja gives a lovely explanation: just as he is free once the goal is reached, so is he free even at the stage of practice. His senses, mind and intellect have become unfit to go anywhere other than the contemplation of the self. Madhva calls these two verses together the method of meditation.

For life today
Doctors see desire, fear and anger in the clinic every day, in patients and in themselves. The wish to be cured, fear of the report, anger at the delay. All three are woven into one another.
Complete freedom from them belongs to the accomplished. For people like us, the first step is to name them and recognise them when they come. A fear that has been named becomes a little smaller than a nameless one.
