Context and commentary on verse 13.1

The thirteenth chapter opens with a simple sentence: this body is the field, and the one who knows it is the knower of the field. Shankara gives four derivations of the word ‘kshetra’: that which protects from decay, that which decays, that which wastes away, or that in which, as in a field, the fruit of action grows. The one who makes this body, from the soles of the feet to the crown of the head, the object of his knowing is the kshetrajna. Sridhara Swami links the chapter to the previous one: the Lord had said ‘I lift my devotees out of worldly existence’ (12.7), and since there is no such release without knowledge of the Self, he now teaches that knowledge.

Ramanuja gives an example from everyday experience: ‘I am a god, I am human, I am stout, I am thin’, and so the body appears to be one with the self. Yet it is the field of the experiencing self’s experience, other than that self. The one who knows ‘I know this’ is other than the object known. Madhva states the purpose of the chapter: to gather together knowledge, the knowable, the field and the person, spoken of here and there before, and to show them as distinct. Some editions have, before this verse, a verse with Arjuna’s question, ‘prakritim purusham chaiva’. It is not part of the Gita of seven hundred verses and Shankara wrote no comment on it, so the count on these pages begins here.

For life today

What is sown in a field is what grows. To see the body as a field is not to neglect it, but to tend it with care, as a farmer does: sleep, food, movement and rest.

Ramanuja’s example, ‘I am stout, I am thin’, is fresh even today. This verse gently questions the habit of measuring our worth by the body’s weight, colour or illnesses.
