ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಂ ಪುರುಷಂ ಚೈವ ವಿದ್ಧ್ಯನಾದೀ ಉಭಾವಪಿ।

प्रकृतिं पुरुषं चैव विद्ध्यनादी उभावपि।
विकारांश्च गुणांश्चैव विद्धि प्रकृतिसम्भवान् ॥ 19 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಂ ಪುರುಷಂ ಚ ಏವ (प्रकृतिं पुरुषं च एव, prakṛtiṃ puruṣaṃ ca eva) = ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಪುರುಷನನ್ನೂ (prakriti and purusha)
- ಉಭೌ ಅಪಿ ಅನಾದೀ ವಿದ್ಧಿ (उभौ अपि अनादी विद्धि, ubhau api anādī viddhi) = ಎರಡೂ ಆದಿಯಿಲ್ಲದವು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿ (know both to be beginningless)

ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪುರುಷ ಎರಡೂ ಆದಿಯಿಲ್ಲದವು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿ. ವಿಕಾರಗಳೂ ಗುಣಗಳೂ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿ.

ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಭಾಗ ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ: ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಜ್ಞರನ್ನೇ ಈಗ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಪುರುಷ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇವನ್ನು ಈಶ್ವರನ ಎರಡು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗಳು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಏಳನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದ ಅಪರಾ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಾ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗಳು (7.4, 7.5). ಈಶ್ವರ ನಿತ್ಯನಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವನ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗಳೂ ನಿತ್ಯವಾಗಿರುವುದು ಸರಿ, ಎರಡು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವುದೇ ಅವನ ಈಶ್ವರತ್ವ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಅವರು. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಇದನ್ನು ಮೂರನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ‘ಯದ್ವಿಕಾರಿ ಯತಶ್ಚ ಯತ್’ ಎಂಬ ಭರವಸೆಯ ವಿವರಣೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.
The second part of the chapter begins here: the field and its knower are now seen under the names prakriti and purusha. Shankara calls them the two prakritis of the Lord, the lower and higher prakriti of the seventh chapter (7.4, 7.5). Since the Lord is eternal it is fitting that his prakritis be eternal too, and his being the Lord, he says, lies in his having these two. Sridhara Swami calls this the unfolding of the promise in the third verse, ‘yadvikari yatash cha yat’.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಅರ್ಥ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ. ಅವರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ‘ವಿಕಾರಗಳು’ ಬಂಧಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದ ಬಯಕೆ, ದ್ವೇಷ ಮೊದಲಾದವು, ‘ಗುಣಗಳು’ ಮೋಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದ ಅಮಾನಿತ್ವ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಗುಣಗಳು. ಎರಡೂ ಪುರುಷನೊಡನೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯಿಂದಲೇ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತವೆ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ಗುಣಗಳು’ ಸತ್ತ್ವ, ರಜಸ್, ತಮಸ್. ಪ್ರಳಯದ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗೂ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗೂ ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಬಹಳ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ವಿಕಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಅವರು.
Ramanuja’s sense is distinctive. For him the ‘modifications’ here are desire, aversion and the rest, which cause bondage, and the ‘gunas’ are the qualities from humility onward, which cause liberation. Both arise from prakriti joined with the self. For Madhva the ‘gunas’ are sattva, rajas and tamas. Between their state at dissolution and at creation the difference is very slight, he says, and so the modifications are mentioned separately.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಅರ್ಥ ಒಂದು ಭರವಸೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ: ಬಂಧಿಸುವ ಸ್ವಭಾವಗಳೂ ಬಿಡಿಸುವ ಸ್ವಭಾವಗಳೂ ಒಂದೇ ನೆಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಯಾವುದಕ್ಕೆ ನೀರೆರೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆಯೋ ಅದು ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
Ramanuja’s sense offers hope: the traits that bind and the traits that free grow in the same soil. Whichever we water is the one that grows.
ಅಭ್ಯಾಸಗಳೂ ಹೀಗೆಯೇ. ಕೋಪದ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ಬಾರಿ ಪುನರಾವರ್ತನೆಯಾದಾಗ ಅದು ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ತಾಳ್ಮೆಯ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆಯೂ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ. ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವಾಗಿ ಬದಲಿಸಬಹುದು.
Habits are the same. An angry response grows firmer each time it is repeated, and so does a patient one. Character can be changed little by little.
