ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕಾರ್ಯಕರಣಕರ್ತೃತ್ವೇ ಹೇತುಃ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿರುಚ್ಯತೇ।
ಪುರುಷಃ ಸುಖದುಃಖಾನಾಂ ಭೋಕ್ತೃತ್ವೇ ಹೇತುರುಚ್ಯತೇ ॥ 20 ॥

कार्यकरणकर्तृत्वे हेतुः प्रकृतिरुच्यते।
पुरुषः सुखदुःखानां भोक्तृत्वे हेतुरुच्यते ॥ 20 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಕಾರ್ಯಕರಣಕರ್ತೃತ್ವೇ (कार्यकरणकर्तृत्वे, kāryakaraṇakartṛtve) = ದೇಹ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂದ್ರಿಯಗಳ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ (in the agency of body and organs)
- ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಃ ಹೇತುಃ ಉಚ್ಯತೇ (प्रकृतिः हेतुः उच्यते, prakṛtiḥ hetuḥ ucyate) = ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಕಾರಣ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ (prakriti is said to be the cause)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ದೇಹ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂದ್ರಿಯಗಳು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಕಾರಣ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸುಖ ದುಃಖಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪುರುಷ ಕಾರಣ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
In the agency of body and organs, prakriti is said to be the cause. In the experience of pleasure and pain, purusha is said to be the cause.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 13.20ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 13.20
ಕೆಲಸ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯದು, ಅನುಭವ ಪುರುಷನದು: ಇದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ವಿಭಾಗ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ಕಾರ್ಯ’ವನ್ನು ದೇಹ ಎಂದೂ ‘ಕರಣ’ವನ್ನು ಅದರಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಹದಿಮೂರು ಸಾಧನಗಳು, ಹತ್ತು ಇಂದ್ರಿಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಮನಸ್ಸು, ಬುದ್ಧಿ, ಅಹಂಕಾರ, ಎಂದೂ ಬಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಕಾರಣ. ಪುರುಷನಿಗೆ ‘ಭೋಕ್ತೃತ್ವ’, ಅನುಭವ, ಹೇಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.
Action belongs to prakriti, experience to purusha: that is the division this verse makes. Shankara explains ‘karya’ as the body and ‘karana’ as the thirteen instruments within it, the ten senses together with mind, intellect and ego. In producing these, prakriti is the cause. How experience comes to purusha, the next verse explains.
ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಭೇದವಿದೆ. ಗೀತಾ ಪ್ರೆಸ್ ಪಾಠ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರಂತೆ ‘ಕಾರ್ಯಕರಣ’ ಎಂದು ಓದುತ್ತದೆ, ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು, ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ‘ಕಾರ್ಯಕಾರಣ’ ಎಂದು ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಅರ್ಥ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಒಂದೇ: ದೇಹ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂದ್ರಿಯಗಳು. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಒಂದು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಪುರುಷನ ಅಧಿಷ್ಠಾನದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯದು, ಆದರೆ ಅಧಿಷ್ಠಾತೃವಾಗಿ ಪುರುಷನಿಗೂ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವವಿದೆ, ಇಲ್ಲವಾದರೆ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ವಿಧಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಥವಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವ ಭಾಗವತದ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಉದ್ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
There is a difference in the text. The Gita Press text reads ‘karyakarana’, effect and instrument, with Shankara, while Ramanuja, Madhva and Sridhara Swami read ‘karyakaarana’, effect and cause, and the sense is much the same: body and senses. Ramanuja adds a subtlety: action belongs to prakriti presided over by the self, but as the one who presides the self too has agency, for otherwise the injunctions of scripture would have no meaning. Madhva quotes a verse of the Bhagavata that says the very same thing.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಹದ ಬಹುಪಾಲು ಕೆಲಸ ನಮ್ಮ ಇಚ್ಛೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆಯೇ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ: ಎದೆಬಡಿತ, ಜೀರ್ಣಕ್ರಿಯೆ, ಉಸಿರಾಟದ ಬಹುಭಾಗ. ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಫಲವನ್ನು, ಆರೋಗ್ಯವನ್ನೋ ನೋವನ್ನೋ, ಅನುಭವಿಸುವವರು ನಾವೇ.
Much of our body’s work goes on without our will: the heartbeat, digestion, most of our breathing. But it is we who experience the result, whether health or pain.
ಆ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಆಳಲಾಗದಿದ್ದರೂ ನಿದ್ರೆ, ಆಹಾರ, ಚಲನೆಗಳಿಂದ ಅವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಪರಿಸರ ಕೊಡಬಹುದು. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ‘ಅಧಿಷ್ಠಾತೃ’ ಮಾತು ಇದನ್ನೇ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
Though we cannot rule those processes directly, we can give them a good setting through sleep, food and movement. Ramanuja’s word ‘the one who presides’ is a reminder of just this.
