ಪುರುಷಃ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಸ್ಥೋ ಹಿ ಭುಂಕ್ತೇ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಜಾನ್ಗುಣಾನ್।
ಕಾರಣಂ ಗುಣಸಂಗೋಽಸ್ಯ ಸದಸದ್ಯೋನಿಜನ್ಮಸು ॥ 21 ॥

पुरुषः प्रकृतिस्थो हि भुङ्क्ते प्रकृतिजान्गुणान्।
कारणं गुणसङ्गोऽस्य सदसद्योनिजन्मसु ॥ 21 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಪುರುಷಃ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಸ್ಥಃ ಹಿ (पुरुषः प्रकृतिस्थः हि, puruṣaḥ prakṛtisthaḥ hi) = ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ ಪುರುಷನೇ (for purusha, seated in prakriti)
- ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಜಾನ್ ಗುಣಾನ್ ಭುಂಕ್ತೇ (प्रकृतिजान् गुणान् भुङ्क्ते, prakṛtijān guṇān bhuṅkte) = ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ (experiences the gunas born of prakriti)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ ಪುರುಷನೇ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಯೋನಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನು ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಗುಣಗಳ ಮೇಲಿನ ಅವನ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯೇ ಕಾರಣ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Purusha, seated in prakriti, experiences the gunas born of prakriti. His attachment to the gunas is the cause of his births in good and evil wombs.

ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ‘ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಸ್ಥ’ ಎಂದರೆ ದೇಹೇಂದ್ರಿಯಗಳಾಗಿ ಪರಿಣಮಿಸಿದ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ತಾನೇ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದವನು. ಆಗ ಅವನು ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ‘ನಾನು ಸುಖಿ, ನಾನು ದುಃಖಿ, ನಾನು ಮೂಢ, ನಾನು ಪಂಡಿತ’ ಎಂದು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಅನುಭವಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಿದ್ಯೆಯೂ, ಹುಟ್ಟುಗಳಿಗೆ ಗುಣಗಳ ಮೇಲಿನ ಸಂಗವೂ ಕಾರಣ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಇದನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ: ವಿಕಾರವಿಲ್ಲದ, ಹುಟ್ಟಿಲ್ಲದ ಪುರುಷನಿಗೆ ಅನುಭವ ಹೇಗೆ? ದೇಹದೊಡನೆ ತಾದಾತ್ಮ್ಯದಿಂದ.
According to Shankara ‘prakritistha’ is one who has taken prakriti, transformed into body and senses, to be himself. Then he experiences the gunas as ‘I am happy, I am sad, I am deluded, I am learned’. Ignorance is the cause of this experience, and attachment to the gunas the cause of births. Sridhara Swami calls this the answer to a question: how can purusha, changeless and unborn, experience at all? Through identifying with the body.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಪುರುಷ ಸ್ವಭಾವತಃ ತನ್ನ ಅನುಭವದ ಸುಖವೊಂದನ್ನೇ ಉಳ್ಳವನು, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಸಂಸರ್ಗದಿಂದ ಸುಖ ದುಃಖಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆ ಸಂಸರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ ಹಿಂದಿನ ದೇಹಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಣಗಳ ಫಲಗಳ ಮೇಲಿದ್ದ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ. ಹೀಗೆ ಈ ಸರಪಳಿ ಅನಾದಿಯಿಂದ ನಡೆದು ಬಂದಿದೆ. ‘ಸದ್ ಅಸದ್ ಯೋನಿ’ ಎಂದರೆ ದೇವ ಮನುಷ್ಯರಂಥ ಉತ್ತಮ ಜನ್ಮಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಂಥ ಬೇರೆ ಜನ್ಮಗಳು. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
According to Ramanuja the self by nature has only the joy of its own experience, and through contact with prakriti it experiences pleasure and pain. The cause of that contact is attachment, in earlier bodies, to the fruits of the gunas. So this chain has run on from beginningless time. ‘Good and evil wombs’ are the higher births of gods and humans and other births such as those of animals. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
‘ನಾನು ಸುಖಿ, ನಾನು ದುಃಖಿ’ ಎಂಬ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ದಿನನಿತ್ಯದ ಮಾತೇ. ‘ನನಗೆ ದುಃಖವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ’ ಎನ್ನುವುದಕ್ಕೂ ‘ನಾನೇ ದುಃಖ’ ಎನ್ನುವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವಿದೆ.
Shankara’s example, ‘I am happy, I am sad’, is our everyday speech. There is a subtle difference between saying ‘sorrow is coming to me’ and ‘I am sorrow’.
ನಾವು ಯಾವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆಯೋ ಅದು ನಮ್ಮ ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಜನ್ಮದಲ್ಲೂ ಅದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ: ನಾವು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಮಯ ಕೊಡುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸಗಳೇ ನಮ್ಮ ನಾಳೆಯನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತವೆ.
What we cling to shapes our path. It can be seen within this very life: the habits we give most time to are what build our tomorrow.
