(English IAST)
yathā sarvagataṃ saukṣmyādākāśaṃ nopalipyate|
sarvatrāvasthito dehe tathātmā nopalipyate || 32 ||
- ಸೌಕ್ಷ್ಮ್ಯಾತ್ ನ ಉಪಲಿಪ್ಯತೇ (सौक्ष्म्यात् न उपलिप्यते, saukṣmyāt na upalipyate) = ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಂಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೋ (is not tainted, being subtle)
- ತಥಾ ದೇಹೇ ಸರ್ವತ್ರ ಅವಸ್ಥಿತಃ (तथा देहे सर्वत्र अवस्थितः, tathā dehe sarvatra avasthitaḥ) = ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ದೇಹದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ (so, present everywhere in the body)
- ಆತ್ಮಾ ನ ಉಪಲಿಪ್ಯತೇ (आत्मा न उपलिप्यते, ātmā na upalipyate) = ಆತ್ಮ ಅಂಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (the self is not tainted)
As all-pervading space, being subtle, is not tainted, so the self, present everywhere in the body, is not tainted.
Context and commentary on verse 13.32
An image for the previous verse’s ‘it is not tainted’. Sridhara Swami unfolds it: space is present even in mud, yet mud does not stick to it, for it is subtle and unattached. In the same way, in whatever body it dwells, high, middle or low, the flaws of that body do not stick to the self. Shankara says it briefly: though pervading all, space, being subtle, is bound to nothing.
Ramanuja adds another subtlety: space is in contact with all things, yet does not take on their nature. The self is subtler even than space, and so, though in bodies of gods, humans and the rest, it does not take on the nature of each body. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Smoke touches the sky, yet the sky does not turn black, and when the wind changes it is blue again. Bad days and bad experiences too cannot spoil our basic nature.
After a traumatic experience many feel ‘I have been ruined’. If that feeling lasts long and disturbs sleep and daily life, it is good to seek the help of a counsellor.
