Context and commentary on verse 13.33
After the image of space in the previous verse comes the image of the sun. Sridhara Swami states the difference between the two: space showed that the self is untainted because it is unattached, and the sun shows that, being the illuminer, it is not touched by the qualities of what it illumines. Shankara gives the image two senses: like the sun, the Self is one in all fields, and like the sun, it is untainted.
Ramanuja applies the image of the sun to knowing: the knower of the field illumines the field with his knowledge, ‘this is my field, it is like this’, from the soles of the feet to the crown of the head, outside and within. As the illumining sun is other than the world it lights, so the knower is other than the body known. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
In a field the sun lights up, both weeds and crop are seen, and neither sticks to the sun. The awareness within us is the same: it sees both good and bad thoughts.
Seeing is the first step. A weed seen in the light can be pulled out, in the dark it just keeps growing.
