Context and commentary on verse 13.34
The close of the chapter. According to Shankara the ‘eye of knowledge’ is the eye that knows the Self directly, born of scripture and the teacher’s gracious instruction. ‘The prakriti of beings’ is for him ignorance, called the unmanifest, and its ‘release’ is its absence. Those who know this reach the supreme Self and take up no body again.
Ramanuja unfolds the word ‘moksha’ as ‘mokshyate anena’, that by which release comes: the qualities from humility onward are the very means of release from prakriti. Madhva reads it the same way: the means of release from the elements and from prakriti are the qualities from humility onward. So the chapter returns to the list of twenty qualities at its centre.

The last word of this chapter is ‘know the difference’. The practice of seeing apart the body and the one who knows it, the experience and the one who experiences, is a great support in hard days.
Ramanuja and Madhva find the means of release in humility, non-violence and patience. The eye of knowledge opens through everyday conduct itself.
