Context and commentary on verse 16.4

After the long list of divine qualities comes a short list of demonic ones. Shankara calls ‘dambha’ ‘dharmadhvajitva’, flying the flag of dharma. ‘Darpa’ is the swelling that comes from learning, wealth and kinsfolk. The example he gives for ‘parushya’ touches the heart: harsh speech that mocks a one-eyed man as ‘you with the fine eyes’, or an ugly man as ‘you handsome one’.

Ramanuja calls ‘dambha’ practising dharma to be known as righteous, and ‘parushya’ a nature that distresses good people. The ‘asuras’ for him are those who go against the Lord’s command. Sridhara Swami calls ‘parushya’ cruelty and ‘ajnana’ lack of discernment. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

Shankara’s example still fits today. Mocking a disability, skin colour or body shape is not a ‘joke’, it wounds deeply.

Such taunting of children at school can spoil their confidence, sleep and studies. If a child suddenly becomes reluctant to go to school, it is good to ask gently and find out.
