Context and commentary on verse 16.6
Shankara gives this the support of the Brihadaranyaka (1.3.1): ‘the children of Prajapati are of two kinds, the gods and the asuras.’ ‘Bhutasarga’ here for him is the creation of humans: humans endowed with these two kinds of wealth are the two kinds. He notes that the description of the ‘divine’ has come earlier in the marks of the one of steady wisdom, the devotee and the knower.
According to Ramanuja, in this world of action beings are born, from the very moment of birth, into two groups, following or going against the Lord’s command, because of past good and bad actions. Sridhara Swami notes another detail: the asura and rakshasa natures are counted as one, hence ‘two’. The detailed account of the demonic wealth follows precisely so that it may be given up completely.

Both tendencies are present, a little of each, in nearly everyone. It is better to use the list not to sort others but to see which one we are growing within ourselves.
The demonic qualities are described at length so that they can be recognised. Just as those who know the symptoms of a disease seek treatment early, faults recognised early can be corrected early.
