Context and commentary on verse 16.18
Shankara calls ego ‘the most grievous ignorance, the root of all faults and of all harmful activity’: taking oneself as ‘I’ with qualities, present or absent, projected onto oneself. ‘Bala’ is power used to crush others. According to Sridhara Swami they perform their hypocritical sacrifices while hating him, who is present as awareness in their own bodies and in those of others.
Ramanuja unfolds the form of ego: ‘I do everything myself, depending on no one.’ Madhva shows one form of this hatred from the Yaska shruti of the Samaveda: to one who challenges, ‘Vishnu makes no one act, and if he does, let him make me act right now’, one should say, ‘you will always go downward’.

The word that the Lord is in every body gives deep meaning to the work of care. Touching a patient’s body with respect and guarding their privacy is how it is lived.
Hatred of others burns the one who hates first. Studies suggest that constant hostility and anger are not good for the heart either.
