Context and commentary on verse 5.9
The list of the last verse continues here. There are thirteen activities in all: the work of the sense organs, the organs of action, the vital breath and the mind. Sridhara Swami says plainly that ‘visrjan’, letting go, refers to excretion. Blinking he assigns to the minor vital breath called kurma.
The key word here is ‘dharayan’, holding firmly in the intellect. It is not something said once and forgotten, but an awareness that stays through every act.
Shankara adds a caution. This is the vision of one who knows the truth. For one who is engaged in the yoga of action without yet knowing the truth, the way is that of the next verse, offering action to the Lord. For Ramanuja, the ‘holding in mind’ here is the reflection that this doership comes from the connection with the body, not from the nature of the self.

For life today
This verse is easy to misread. It is no licence to escape responsibility by saying ‘my hand did it, not I’. The acharyas limit this vision to one who knows the truth, and such a person does not use it as an excuse for wrongdoing.
But in a small way we can practise it too. When anger is rising, if we notice for a moment, ‘the ear has heard a remark and the mind is reacting to it’, a little space opens between that anger and ourselves.
