Context and commentary on verse 5.13

The image of the body as a city of nine gates is found in the Upanishads too. The same phrase, ‘the embodied one in the city of nine gates’, occurs in the Shvetashvatara Upanishad. Seven gates are in the head: two eyes, two ears, two nostrils and the mouth. Two are below, for excretion.

Sridhara Swami notes that the argument turns here. Until now it was said that for one whose mind is not yet pure, the yoga of action is better. Now it is said that for the pure in mind, renunciation is best. Because he has no ego he does not act, and because he has no possessiveness he does not cause others to act.

Shankara finds a subtlety in the very phrase ‘dwells in the body’. One might ask whether everyone does not dwell in the body. But one who takes the body to be himself says ‘I am in the house, on the ground, on the seat’. Only one who sees himself as distinct from the body can think ‘I dwell in the body’, as one dwells in a house.

For Ramanuja ‘renouncing by the mind’ is a discernment: knowing that doership comes from the connection with a body brought by past karma, not from the nature of the self, one places actions in that city of nine gates itself. Madhva says the word ‘by the mind’ shows that the renunciation meant here is the giving up of the sense of ownership.

For life today

To a doctor the body really does look like a city. Gates, roads, guards, a waste-disposal system, traffic running day and night. Living in a city is not the same as thinking ‘I am the city’.

If the body is seen as ‘the house I live in’, caring for it becomes calmer. When a wall of the house cracks we repair it, but we do not collapse as if the crack were ourselves.
