Context and commentary on verse 13.29
Again ‘sa pashyati’. Sridhara Swami calls this the answer to a doubt: we see some do good deeds and some bad, so how is the self the same in all? The answer: action belongs to prakriti, transformed into body and senses. Shankara calls the prakriti here the Lord’s maya made of the three gunas, and quotes the Shvetashvatara’s ‘mayam tu prakritim vidyat’. The self, like space, is without adjuncts and is not the doer.
Ramanuja recalls the twentieth verse: in the agency of body and senses prakriti is the cause. One who sees the self as of the form of knowledge, not a doer in its own nature, understands that its contact with prakriti has come from karma. Madhva says briefly, ‘one who sees the self as not the doer, sees.’ Many read this ‘non-doership’ not as a way of escaping responsibility but as letting go of the pride ‘I alone did it’.

For life today
When success comes the feeling ‘I did it’ is natural. Yet no work is done by one person alone: the team, the tools, the circumstances and the health of the body all have a share in it.
Seeing this makes both easier: humility in success, and not blaming oneself excessively in failure. Still, when something goes wrong, the duty to own it and set it right is ours.
