ರಾತ್ರಿ ಚಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ನೀರಿನ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯ ಕೊಡುವಾಗ ಹೇಳುವ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲಿನ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಇದು.
ಚಂದ್ರ ಹಾಲಿನ ಸಮುದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವನು, ಅತ್ರಿಯ ವಂಶದವನು ಮತ್ತು ರೋಹಿಣಿಯ ಸಂಗಾತಿ ಎಂದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅವನನ್ನು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಚೌತಿ, ಸಂಕಷ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾರ್ತಿಕ ಮಾಸದ ರಾತ್ರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚಂದ್ರೋದಯದ ಬಳಿಕ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯ ಕೊಡುವ ಪದ್ಧತಿ ಇದೆ. ಆಗ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕ್ಷೀರೋದಾರ್ಣವಸಂಭೂತ ಅತ್ರಿಗೋತ್ರಸಮುದ್ಭವ ।
ಗೃಹಾಣಾರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ಶಶಾಂಕೇದಂ ರೋಹಿಣ್ಯಾ ಸಹಿತೋ ಮಮ ॥

क्षीरोदार्णवसंभूत अत्रिगोत्रसमुद्भव ।
गृहाणार्घ्यं शशांकेदं रोहिण्या सहितो मम ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಕ್ಷೀರೋದಾರ್ಣವಸಂಭೂತ (क्षीरोदार्णवसंभूत, kṣīrodārṇavasaṃbhūta) = ಹಾಲಿನ ಸಮುದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವನೇ (ಕ್ಷೀರ + ಉದ + ಅರ್ಣವ + ಸಂಭೂತ) (O one born from the ocean of milk)
- ಅತ್ರಿಗೋತ್ರಸಮುದ್ಭವ (अत्रिगोत्रसमुद्भव, atrigotrasamudbhava) = ಅತ್ರಿ ಗೋತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವನೇ (O one born in the line of Atri)
- ಗೃಹಾಣ (गृहाण, gṛhāṇa) = ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸು (accept)
- ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಂ (अर्घ्यं, arghyaṃ) = ಅರ್ಘ್ಯವನ್ನು, ಗೌರವದ ನೀರನ್ನು (the arghya, the water of honour)
- ಶಶಾಂಕ (शशांक, śaśāṃka) = ಚಂದ್ರನೇ (ಮೊಲದ ಗುರುತುಳ್ಳವನು) (O Moon, bearer of the hare mark)
- ಇದಂ (इदं, idaṃ) = ಇದನ್ನು (this)
- ರೋಹಿಣ್ಯಾ (रोहिण्या, rohiṇyā) = ರೋಹಿಣಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ (with Rohini)
- ಸಹಿತಃ (सहितः, sahitaḥ) = ಕೂಡಿದವನಾಗಿ (together)
- ಮಮ (मम, mama) = ನನ್ನ, ನಮ್ಮ (my)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಹಾಲಿನ ಸಮುದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಚಂದ್ರನೇ, ಅತ್ರಿಯ ವಂಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಉದಯಿಸಿದವನೇ, ಶಶಾಂಕನೇ. ರೋಹಿಣಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ನಾವು ಕೊಡುವ ಈ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸು.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O Moon, born from the ocean of milk and risen in the line of Atri. Come with Rohini and accept this arghya that we offer.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಇದು ಚಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯ ಕೊಡುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕ. ಚಂದ್ರನ ಜನ್ಮದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪುರಾಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಮಾತುಗಳಿವೆ. ಕ್ಷೀರಸಾಗರ ಮಥನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವನು ಎಂದು ಒಂದು ಪರಂಪರೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅತ್ರಿ ಮುನಿಯ ಮಗ ಎಂದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
This is a verse for offering arghya to the Moon. The Puranas give two accounts of the Moon’s birth. One tradition says he rose from the churning of the milk ocean. Another says he was the son of the sage Atri. This verse recalls both.
ಅನೇಕ ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರನೇ ಪಾದ ರೋಹಿಣ್ಯ ಸಹಿತೋ ಮಮ ಎಂದು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ವ್ಯಾಕರಣದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ರೋಹಿಣ್ಯಾ ಸಹಿತಃ ಎಂಬ ರೂಪ ಸರಿಯೆಂದು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಶಶಾಂಕೇದಂ ಎಂಬುದು ಶಶಾಂಕ + ಇದಂ ಎಂಬ ಸಂಧಿ.
Many printed versions give the last line as rohiNya sahito mama. We use rohiNyA sahitaH, the grammatically sound form. The word shashankedam is the join of shashanka and idam.
ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆ ಗೃಹಾಣಾರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ಬದಲು ಗೃಹಾಣಾರ್ಧ್ಯಂ ಎಂದು ಅಚ್ಚಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಮುದ್ರಣದ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ. ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಯಾವ ಗ್ರಂಥದ್ದು ಎಂದು ನಮಗೆ ಖಚಿತವಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ.
Some places print the word as arghyam with a different consonant. That is a printing variant. We are not certain which text this verse comes from.

ರಾತ್ರಿ ಆಕಾಶದ ಕಡೆ ನೋಡಿ ಕೆಲವು ಕ್ಷಣ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದು ದಿನದ ಗಡಿಬಿಡಿಯನ್ನು ತಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲು ಆ ಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಶಾಂತ ರೂಪ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.
Standing for a few moments and looking at the night sky eases the rush of the day. These two lines give that moment a calm shape.
ಅರ್ಘ್ಯ ಎಂದರೆ ಗೌರವದಿಂದ ಕೊಡುವ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನೀರು. ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗೆ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ತೋರುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವಾಗಿ ಇದನ್ನು ನೋಡಬಹುದು.
Arghya is a little water given with respect. We can see it as a habit of showing gratitude to nature.
