ಮದುವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವರನು ವಧುವಿನ ಕೈ ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಪಾಣಿಗ್ರಹಣ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವ ಋಗ್ವೇದದ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲಿನ ಮಂತ್ರ ಇದು.
ಜೀವನಪೂರ್ತಿ ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಮುಪ್ಪಿನವರೆಗೆ ಬಾಳುವ ಸಂಕಲ್ಪವನ್ನು ಈ ಮಂತ್ರ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಭಗ, ಅರ್ಯಮ, ಸವಿತೃ ಮತ್ತು ಪುರಂಧಿ ಎಂಬ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಗೃಹಸ್ಥ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಗೃಭ್ಣಾಮಿ ತೇ ಸೌಭಗತ್ವಾಯ ಹಸ್ತಂ ಮಯಾ ಪತ್ಯಾ ಜರದಷ್ಟಿರ್ಯಥಾಸಃ ।
ಭಗೋ ಅರ್ಯಮಾ ಸವಿತಾ ಪುರಂಧಿರ್ಮಹ್ಯಂ ತ್ವಾದುರ್ಗಾರ್ಹಪತ್ಯಾಯ ದೇವಾಃ ॥

गृभ्णामि ते सौभगत्वाय हस्तं मया पत्या जरदष्टिर्यथासः ।
भगो अर्यमा सविता पुरंधिर्मह्यं त्वादुर्गार्हपत्याय देवाः ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಗೃಭ್ಣಾಮಿ (गृभ्णामि, gṛbhṇāmi) = ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತೇನೆ (I take hold)
- ತೇ (ते, te) = ನಿನ್ನ (your)
- ಸೌಭಗತ್ವಾಯ (सौभगत्वाय, saubhagatvāya) = ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಭಾಗ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ (for good fortune)
- ಹಸ್ತಂ (हस्तं, hastaṃ) = ಕೈಯನ್ನು (the hand)
- ಮಯಾ (मया, mayā) = ನನ್ನೊಂದಿಗೆ (with me)
- ಪತ್ಯಾ (पत्या, patyā) = ಪತಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ (with your husband)
- ಜರದಷ್ಟಿರ್ಯಥಾಸಃ (जरदष्टिर्यथासः, jaradaṣṭiryathāsaḥ) = ಮುಪ್ಪಿನವರೆಗೆ ಬಾಳುವವಳಾಗಿ ಇರುವಂತೆ (ಜರದಷ್ಟಿಃ + ಯಥಾ + ಆಸಃ) (that you may live to a ripe old age (jaradashtih + yatha + asah))
- ಭಗೋ (भगो, bhago) = ಭಗ ದೇವತೆ (the god Bhaga)
- ಅರ್ಯಮಾ (अर्यमा, aryamā) = ಅರ್ಯಮ ದೇವತೆ (the god Aryaman)
- ಸವಿತಾ (सविता, savitā) = ಸವಿತೃ ದೇವತೆ (the god Savitr)
- ಪುರಂಧಿರ್ಮಹ್ಯಂ (पुरंधिर्मह्यं, puraṃdhirmahyaṃ) = ಪುರಂಧಿ ದೇವಿ, ನನಗೆ (ಪುರಂಧಿಃ + ಮಹ್ಯಂ) (the goddess Purandhi, to me (purandhih + mahyam))
- ತ್ವಾದುರ್ಗಾರ್ಹಪತ್ಯಾಯ (त्वादुर्गार्हपत्याय, tvādurgārhapatyāya) = ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟರು, ಗೃಹಸ್ಥ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ (ತ್ವಾ + ಅದುಃ + ಗಾರ್ಹಪತ್ಯಾಯ) (gave you, for the life of a household (tva + aduh + garhapatyaya))
- ದೇವಾಃ (देवाः, devāḥ) = ದೇವತೆಗಳು (the gods)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ನಿನ್ನ ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಿನ್ನ ಕೈಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಪತಿಯಾದ ನನ್ನೊಂದಿಗೆ ನೀನು ಮುಪ್ಪಿನವರೆಗೆ ಬಾಳು. ಭಗ, ಅರ್ಯಮ, ಸವಿತೃ ಮತ್ತು ಪುರಂಧಿ ಎಂಬ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಗೃಹಸ್ಥ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ನನಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
I take your hand for good fortune, so that you may live with me, your husband, to a ripe old age. Bhaga, Aryaman, Savitr and Purandhi, the gods, have given you to me for the life of a household.
ಈ ಮಂತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this mantra
ಇದು ಋಗ್ವೇದದ ವಿವಾಹ ಸೂಕ್ತದ ಒಂದು ಮಂತ್ರ. ವರನು ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವುದರಿಂದ ಮಂತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುವವನು ಅವನೇ. ಮದುವೆಯ ವಿಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪುರೋಹಿತರು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಡುವ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ವರನು ಪುನರುಚ್ಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.
This is a verse from the marriage hymn of the Rigveda. The groom speaks it, so the speaker in the mantra is he. In the ceremony he repeats the words the priest recites for him.
ಕೊನೆಯ ಪದವನ್ನು ಕೆಲವು ಪಠ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತ್ವಾದುಃ ಗಾರ್ಹಪತ್ಯಾಯ ಎಂದು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ ಮುದ್ರಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಋಗ್ವೇದದ ಸಂಹಿತಾ ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ತ್ವಾದುರ್ಗಾರ್ಹಪತ್ಯಾಯ ಎಂದು ಕೂಡಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡಿದ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
Some printings split the last word as tvaduh garhapatyaya. In the Rigveda samhita text it is joined as tvadurgarhapatyaya. Here we keep the joined form.
ಮದುವೆಯ ಪದ್ಧತಿ ಕುಟುಂಬದಿಂದ ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಖೆಯಿಂದ ಶಾಖೆಗೆ ಬದಲಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೇ ಮಂತ್ರದ ಬೇರೆ ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳೂ ಗೃಹ್ಯಸೂತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ.

ಮದುವೆಯ ಮೊದಲ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶವೇ ಒಂದು ಮಾತು ಕೊಡುವ ಕ್ಷಣ. ಮುಪ್ಪಿನವರೆಗೆ ಜೊತೆಗಿರುವ ಹಂಬಲವನ್ನು ಈ ಮಂತ್ರ ಮೆಲ್ಲನೆ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
The first touch of a wedding is a moment of giving one’s word. This mantra gently reminds us of the wish to stay together into old age.
ಇಬ್ಬರ ಬಾಳು ಒಂದು ದಿನದ ಸಮಾರಂಭವಲ್ಲ. ದಿನದಿನದ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಾಳಜಿಗಳು ಈ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.
