ಸೂರ್ಯ, ಚಂದ್ರ, ತಾರೆ, ಮಿಂಚು ಮತ್ತು ಅಗ್ನಿ ಯಾವುದೂ ಆ ತತ್ತ್ವವನ್ನು ಬೆಳಗಿಸಲಾರವು ಎನ್ನುವ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲಿನ ಉಪನಿಷತ್ ಮಂತ್ರ ಇದು.
ಆ ತತ್ತ್ವ ಬೆಳಗಿದಾಗಲೇ ಉಳಿದೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಮಾತು. ಬೆಳಕಿನ ಮೂಲ ಹೊರಗಲ್ಲ, ಒಳಗಿನ ಅರಿವು ಎಂದು ಈ ಮಂತ್ರ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ನ ತತ್ರ ಸೂರ್ಯೋ ಭಾತಿ ನ ಚಂದ್ರತಾರಕಂ
ನೇಮಾ ವಿದ್ಯುತೋ ಭಾಂತಿ ಕುತೋಽಯಮಗ್ನಿಃ ।
ತಮೇವ ಭಾಂತಮನುಭಾತಿ ಸರ್ವಂ
ತಸ್ಯ ಭಾಸಾ ಸರ್ವಮಿದಂ ವಿಭಾತಿ ॥

न तत्र सूर्यो भाति न चंद्रतारकं
नेमा विद्युतो भांति कुतोऽयमग्निः ।
तमेव भांतमनुभाति सर्वं
तस्य भासा सर्वमिदं विभाति ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)
na tatra sūryo bhāti na caṃdratārakaṃ
nemā vidyuto bhāṃti kuto’yamagniḥ |
tameva bhāṃtamanubhāti sarvaṃ
tasya bhāsā sarvamidaṃ vibhāti ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
- ತತ್ರ (तत्र, tatra) = ಅಲ್ಲಿ (there)
- ಸೂರ್ಯೋ (सूर्यो, sūryo) = ಸೂರ್ಯ (the sun)
- ಭಾತಿ (भाति, bhāti) = ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತಾನೆ (shines)
- ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (nor)
- ಚಂದ್ರತಾರಕಂ (चंद्रतारकं, caṃdratārakaṃ) = ಚಂದ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ತಾರೆಗಳು (the moon and the stars)
- ನೇಮಾ (नेमा, nemā) = ಇಲ್ಲ, ಈ (ನ + ಇಮಾಃ) (not these (na + imah))
- ವಿದ್ಯುತೋ (विद्युतो, vidyuto) = ಮಿಂಚುಗಳು (lightnings)
- ಭಾಂತಿ (भांति, bhāṃti) = ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತವೆ (shine)
- ಕುತೋಽಯಮಗ್ನಿಃ (कुतोऽयमग्निः, kuto’yamagniḥ) = ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಈ ಅಗ್ನಿ (ಕುತಃ + ಅಯಂ + ಅಗ್ನಿಃ) (how then this fire (kutah + ayam + agnih))
- ತಮೇವ (तमेव, tameva) = ಅವನನ್ನೇ (ತಂ + ಏವ) (him alone (tam + eva))
- ಭಾಂತಮನುಭಾತಿ (भांतमनुभाति, bhāṃtamanubhāti) = ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತಿರುವವನನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತದೆ (ಭಾಂತಂ + ಅನುಭಾತಿ) (shines after him who shines (bhantam + anubhati))
- ಸರ್ವಂ (सर्वं, sarvaṃ) = ಎಲ್ಲವೂ (everything)
- ತಸ್ಯ (तस्य, tasya) = ಅವನ (his)
- ಭಾಸಾ (भासा, bhāsā) = ಬೆಳಕಿನಿಂದ (by the light)
- ಸರ್ವಮಿದಂ (सर्वमिदं, sarvamidaṃ) = ಈ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ (ಸರ್ವಂ + ಇದಂ) (all this (sarvam + idam))
- ವಿಭಾತಿ (विभाति, vibhāti) = ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತದೆ (shines forth)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಬೆಳಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಚಂದ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ತಾರೆಗಳೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಮಿಂಚುಗಳೂ ಬೆಳಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇನ್ನು ಈ ಅಗ್ನಿಯ ಮಾತೇನು. ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಅವನನ್ನೇ ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವನ ಬೆಳಕಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಈ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
The sun does not shine there, nor the moon and the stars, nor do these lightnings. How then this fire? Everything shines after him who shines. By his light all this shines forth.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಇದು ಕಠೋಪನಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಎರಡನೇ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದ ಎರಡನೇ ವಲ್ಲಿಯ 15ನೇ ಮಂತ್ರ. ಇದೇ ಮಂತ್ರ ಮುಂಡಕೋಪನಿಷತ್ತಿನ 2.2.10ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ವೇತಾಶ್ವತರ ಉಪನಿಷತ್ತಿನ 6.14ರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಪಾಠಗಳು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.
This is mantra 15 of the second section of the second chapter of the Katha Upanishad. Well-known Sanskrit editions show the same mantra at Mundaka Upanishad 2.2.10 and Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.14.
ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆಯ 15ನೇ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದ 6ನೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದರ ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ವನಿ ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಮಧಾಮವನ್ನು ಸೂರ್ಯ, ಚಂದ್ರ, ಅಗ್ನಿ ಬೆಳಗಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದೆ.
The Bhagavad Gita, chapter 15 verse 6, echoes it. There the supreme abode is not lit by sun, moon or fire.
ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲಿನ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಂದ್ರತಾರಕಂ ಎಂದು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಪಾಠಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ. ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನೇ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ದೀಪ ಹಚ್ಚುವಾಗ ಈ ಮಂತ್ರ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮಗೆ ಕಾಣುವುದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಬೆಳಗಿಸುವ ಬೆಳಕು ಯಾವುದು. ಈ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣ ಸುಮ್ಮನಿರಬಹುದು.
When we light a lamp, this mantra asks a question. What is the light by which we see everything? We can stay quiet with that question for a moment.
ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಅವನ ಬೆಳಕಿನಿಂದ ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ತಿಳಿವಿಗೂ ಒಂದು ಮೂಲ ಇದೆ ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ. ಅದನ್ನು ಅರಿಯುವ ಹಂಬಲ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ.
If everything shines by his light, then our own knowing also has a source. This mantra awakens the wish to know it.
