ಮದುವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಬ್ಬರ ಹೃದಯಗಳು ಒಂದಾಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇಡುವ ಋಗ್ವೇದದ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲಿನ ಮಂತ್ರ ಇದು.
ನೀರು ಬೆರೆತಂತೆ ಹೃದಯಗಳು ಬೆರೆಯಲಿ ಎಂಬ ಹಾರೈಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ವಿವಾಹ ವಿಧಿಯ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವಧೂವರರು ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಾಗ ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯಿದೆ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಮಂಜಂತು ವಿಶ್ವೇ ದೇವಾಃ ಸಮಾಪೋ ಹೃದಯಾನಿ ನೌ ।
ಸಂ ಮಾತರಿಶ್ವಾ ಸಂಧಾತಾ ಸಮು ದೇಷ್ಟ್ರೀ ದಧಾತು ನೌ ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
समंजंतु विश्वे देवाः समापो हृदयानि नौ ।
सं मातरिश्वा संधाता समु देष्ट्री दधातु नौ ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)
samaṃjaṃtu viśve devāḥ samāpo hṛdayāni nau |
saṃ mātariśvā saṃdhātā samu deṣṭrī dadhātu nau ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸಮಂಜಂತು (समंजंतु, samaṃjaṃtu) = ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಬೆಸೆಯಲಿ, ಒಂದುಗೂಡಿಸಲಿ (may they join together)
- ವಿಶ್ವೇ (विश्वे, viśve) = ಎಲ್ಲ (all)
- ದೇವಾಃ (देवाः, devāḥ) = ದೇವತೆಗಳು (the gods)
- ಸಮಾಪೋ (समापो, samāpo) = ನೀರುಗಳೂ ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ (ಸಂ + ಆಪಃ) (and the waters too, together (sam + apah))
- ಹೃದಯಾನಿ (हृदयानि, hṛdayāni) = ಹೃದಯಗಳನ್ನು (the hearts)
- ನೌ (नौ, nau) = ನಮ್ಮಿಬ್ಬರ (of us two)
- ಸಂ (सं, saṃ) = ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ (together)
- ಮಾತರಿಶ್ವಾ (मातरिश्वा, mātariśvā) = ಮಾತರಿಶ್ವ, ಅಂದರೆ ಗಾಳಿ ಅಥವಾ ವಾಯು (Matarishva, the wind)
- ಸಂಧಾತಾ (संधाता, saṃdhātā) = ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಧಾತಾ, ಅಂದರೆ ಧರಿಸುವ ಮತ್ತು ರೂಪಿಸುವ ದೇವ (ಸಂ + ಧಾತಾ) (together Dhata, the god who sustains and shapes (sam + dhata))
- ಸಮು (समु, samu) = ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ (ಸಂ + ಉ) (and likewise together (sam + u))
- ದೇಷ್ಟ್ರೀ (देष्ट्री, deṣṭrī) = ದೇಷ್ಟ್ರೀ ದೇವಿ, ದಾರಿ ತೋರಿಸುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ (Deshtri, the goddess who guides)
- ದಧಾತು (दधातु, dadhātu) = ಇರಿಸಲಿ, ಬೆಸೆಯಲಿ (may she set)
- ನೌ (नौ, nau) = ನಮ್ಮಿಬ್ಬರನ್ನು (us two)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಎಲ್ಲ ದೇವತೆಗಳೂ ನೀರುಗಳೂ ನಮ್ಮಿಬ್ಬರ ಹೃದಯಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದಾಗಿ ಬೆಸೆಯಲಿ. ವಾಯುವೂ ಧಾತೃವೂ ಬೆಸೆಯಲಿ. ದಾರಿ ತೋರುವ ದೇಷ್ಟ್ರೀ ದೇವಿಯೂ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಒಂದಾಗಿ ಇರಿಸಲಿ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
May all the gods, and the waters too, join the hearts of us two. May the wind, Dhata and the guiding goddess Deshtri set us together.
ಈ ಮಂತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this mantra
ಇದು ಋಗ್ವೇದದ ವಿವಾಹ ಸೂಕ್ತದ ಒಂದು ಮಂತ್ರ. ಇದೇ ಮಂತ್ರ ಕೆಲವು ವೇದ ಶಾಖೆಗಳ ಬೇರೆ ಪಠ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಮದುವೆಯ ಯಾವ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಪದ್ಧತಿಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಬದಲಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
This is a verse from the marriage hymn of the Rigveda. The same verse appears in the texts of other Vedic branches too. So the step of the wedding at which it is said varies with the family custom.
ದೇಷ್ಟ್ರೀ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಉಪದೇಶ ಮಾಡುವವಳು ಅಥವಾ ದಿಕ್ಕು ತೋರಿಸುವವಳು ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶಿಯಾದ ದೇವಿ ಎಂದು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
Commentators read deshtri as one who instructs or shows the way. Here we take it as a guiding goddess.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಒಂದೇ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದು ಬೇರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೃದಯ ಬೆರೆಯುವುದು ಬೇರೆ. ಈ ಮಂತ್ರ ಎರಡನೆಯದನ್ನು ಬೇಡುತ್ತದೆ.
Living under one roof is one thing, and hearts blending is another. This mantra asks for the second.
ನೀರು ಬೆರೆತರೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಬೇರ್ಪಡಿಸುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಕೇಳುವಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಈ ಬೆರೆಯುವಿಕೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
