Context and commentary on verse 7.1
The sixth chapter closed with ‘the one who worships me with faith is the most steadfast’. The seventh begins to say who the Lord at the centre of that devotion is, and what he is like. In the tradition that sees the eighteen chapters as three groups of six, the second group starts here.
Madhva states the division plainly: the earlier chapters mainly taught the means, and the next six mainly teach the greatness of the Lord. For him ‘madashrayah’ means resting in the Lord with the understanding that it is he who causes me to do everything, and that he alone is my refuge.
Shankara opens ‘madashrayah’ with a comparison. One who wants some result takes refuge in a means such as the agnihotra, austerity or charity. This yogi sets other means aside and takes refuge in the Lord alone. ‘Samagram’ means the complete form, with all its glories, strength, power and lordship.
Ramanuja gives ‘asaktamanah’ a very deep sense: a mind bound so tightly to the Lord that even a moment’s separation would make it fall apart. ‘Madashrayah’ is one who has the Lord as his only support, knowing he cannot stand without him.

For life today
There is a large gap between saying ‘I know’ and saying ‘I know fully, without doubt’. In medicine, what is learnt from books is one thing, and what is learnt from years at the bedside is another.
This verse sets one condition for that second kind of knowing: the mind must be attached to its subject. That no learning goes deep without real interest is something all of us have experienced.
