ಉದಾರಾಃ ಸರ್ವ ಏವೈತೇ ಜ್ಞಾನೀ ತ್ವಾತ್ಮೈವ ಮೇ ಮತಮ್।
ಆಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಸ ಹಿ ಯುಕ್ತಾತ್ಮಾ ಮಾಮೇವಾನುತ್ತಮಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್ ॥ 18 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
उदाराः सर्व एवैते ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम्।
आस्थितः स हि युक्तात्मा मामेवानुत्तमां गतिम् ॥ 18 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಏತೇ ಸರ್ವೇ ಏವ ಉದಾರಾಃ (एते सर्वे एव उदाराः, ete sarve eva udārāḥ) = ಇವರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಉದಾರರೇ (all these are noble)
- ಜ್ಞಾನೀ ತು ಆತ್ಮಾ ಏವ ಇತಿ ಮೇ ಮತಮ್ (ज्ञानी तु आत्मा एव इति मे मतम्, jñānī tu ātmā eva iti me matam) = ಆದರೆ ಜ್ಞಾನಿ ನನ್ನ ಆತ್ಮವೇ ಎಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ (but the wise one I regard as my very self)
- ಸಃ ಯುಕ್ತಾತ್ಮಾ ಹಿ (सः युक्तात्मा हि, saḥ yuktātmā hi) = ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಯುಕ್ತಚಿತ್ತನಾದ ಅವನು (for he, steadfast in mind)
- ಮಾಮ್ ಏವ ಅನುತ್ತಮಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್ ಆಸ್ಥಿತಃ (माम् एव अनुत्तमां गतिम् आस्थितः, mām eva anuttamāṃ gatim āsthitaḥ) = ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ಗತಿಯಾದ ನನ್ನನ್ನೇ ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದಾನೆ (is established in me alone as the highest goal)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಇವರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಉದಾರರೇ. ಆದರೆ ಜ್ಞಾನಿ ನನ್ನ ಆತ್ಮವೇ ಎಂಬುದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಯುಕ್ತಚಿತ್ತನಾದ ಅವನು ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ಗತಿಯಾದ ನನ್ನನ್ನೇ ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದಾನೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
All these are noble indeed, but the wise one I regard as my very self. For he, steadfast in mind, is established in me alone as the highest goal.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 7.18ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 7.18
ಹಿಂದಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ನಂತರ ಉಳಿದ ಮೂವರು ಭಗವಂತನಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಿಯರಲ್ಲವೇ ಎಂಬ ಅನುಮಾನ ಬರಬಹುದು. ‘ಉದಾರಾಃ ಸರ್ವ ಏವೈತೇ’, ಇವರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಉದಾರರು ಎಂದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದನ್ನು ತಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ, ನನ್ನ ಯಾವ ಭಕ್ತನೂ ನನಗೆ ಅಪ್ರಿಯನಲ್ಲ.
After the last verse one might wonder whether the other three are not dear to the Lord. ‘Udarah sarva evaite’, all these are noble, rules that out. In Shankara’s words, no devotee of mine is unloved by me.
‘ಜ್ಞಾನೀ ತ್ವಾತ್ಮೈವ’ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಆಚಾರ್ಯರ ದಾರಿ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಇದು ಅಕ್ಷರಶಃ ಏಕತ್ವ: ಜ್ಞಾನಿ ನನ್ನಿಂದ ಬೇರೆಯಲ್ಲ. ‘ನಾನೇ ಭಗವಾನ್ ವಾಸುದೇವ, ಬೇರೆಯಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂಬ ಅರಿವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನು ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮವೆಂಬ ಗತಿಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಲು ತೊಡಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ.
At ‘jnani tv atmaiva’ the acharyas part ways. For Shankara it is oneness in the literal sense: the wise one is not other than me. In the knowledge ‘I am the Lord Vasudeva and no other’, he has set out to reach the supreme Brahman as his goal.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೃದಯಸ್ಪರ್ಶಿಯಾದ ಬೇರೆ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ‘ಉದಾರ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಕೊಡುವವರು: ನನ್ನಿಂದ ಏನನ್ನಾದರೂ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವವರು ನನಗೆ ಸರ್ವಸ್ವವನ್ನೂ ಕೊಟ್ಟಂತೆ. ಜ್ಞಾನಿ ನನ್ನ ‘ಆತ್ಮ’ ಎಂದರೆ ನನ್ನ ಬದುಕಿನ ಆಧಾರ: ಅವನು ನಾನಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಬದುಕಲಾರ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ನಾನೂ ಅವನಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಇರಲಾರೆ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
Ramanuja gives it a different and moving sense. ‘Udara’ means generous givers: those who accept anything from me are as good as giving me everything. The wise one is my ‘self’ in that he sustains me: he cannot live without me, and so I cannot be without him either. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಮಗು ಏನನ್ನಾದರೂ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ತಾಯಿಗೆ ಅದರಿಂದ ಖುಷಿಯಾಗುವುದುಂಟು. ಕೇಳುವುದು ಸಂಬಂಧದ ಗುರುತು. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ‘ನನ್ನಿಂದ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವವರೇ ಉದಾರರು’ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಆ ಅನುಭವಕ್ಕೆ ಹತ್ತಿರ.
A mother is often glad when her child asks her for something. Asking is a sign of the bond. Ramanuja’s word, that those who receive from me are the generous ones, is close to that experience.
ಕೇಳುವವರು ಕೀಳು ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಆಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಸಹಾಯ ಕೇಳಲು ನಾಚಿ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಿಡುವವರೂ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ನಾಚಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಡಿಲಗೊಳಿಸಬಹುದು.
The feeling that those who ask are somehow lesser runs deep in us. Some even hide an illness because they are ashamed to ask for help. This verse may loosen that shame a little.
