ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕಾಮೈಸ್ತೈಸ್ತೈರ್ಹೃತಜ್ಞಾನಾಃ ಪ್ರಪದ್ಯಂತೇಽನ್ಯದೇವತಾಃ।
ತಂ ತಂ ನಿಯಮಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ ಪ್ರಕೃತ್ಯಾ ನಿಯತಾಃ ಸ್ವಯಾ ॥ 20 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
कामैस्तैस्तैर्हृतज्ञानाः प्रपद्यन्तेऽन्यदेवताः।
तं तं नियममास्थाय प्रकृत्या नियताः स्वया ॥ 20 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)
kāmaistaistairhṛtajñānāḥ prapadyante’nyadevatāḥ|
taṃ taṃ niyamamāsthāya prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā || 20 ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ತೈಃ ತೈಃ ಕಾಮೈಃ ಹೃತಜ್ಞಾನಾಃ (तैः तैः कामैः हृतज्ञानाः, taiḥ taiḥ kāmaiḥ hṛtajñānāḥ) = ಆಯಾ ಬಯಕೆಗಳಿಂದ ವಿವೇಕ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡವರು (those whose discernment is carried away by various desires)
- ಸ್ವಯಾ ಪ್ರಕೃತ್ಯಾ ನಿಯತಾಃ (स्वया प्रकृत्या नियताः, svayā prakṛtyā niyatāḥ) = ತಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಭಾವಕ್ಕೆ ಕಟ್ಟುಬಿದ್ದು (bound by their own nature)
- ತಂ ತಂ ನಿಯಮಮ್ ಆಸ್ಥಾಯ (तं तं नियमम् आस्थाय, taṃ taṃ niyamam āsthāya) = ಆಯಾ ನಿಯಮಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ (following this or that observance)
- ಅನ್ಯದೇವತಾಃ ಪ್ರಪದ್ಯಂತೇ (अन्यदेवताः प्रपद्यन्ते, anyadevatāḥ prapadyante) = ಬೇರೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (resort to other deities)

ಆಯಾ ಬಯಕೆಗಳಿಂದ ವಿವೇಕ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡವರು, ತಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಭಾವಕ್ಕೆ ಕಟ್ಟುಬಿದ್ದು, ಆಯಾ ನಿಯಮಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ಬೇರೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Those whose discernment has been carried away by this or that desire resort to other deities, following this or that observance, bound by their own nature.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಿಂದ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳ ಒಂದು ಗುಂಪು ಶುರುವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ: ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಪೂಜೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಫಲ. ಇವನ್ನು ಇಂದು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ಓದಬೇಕು, ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಪಂಥ ಇನ್ನೊಂದನ್ನು ಕೀಳಾಗಿಸಲು ಬಳಸುವುದುಂಟು.
With this verse begins a group of four on the worship of other deities and its fruit. They need careful reading today, because they are sometimes used by one sect to belittle another.
ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಬಯಕೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಾಗಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳು, ಪಶುಗಳು, ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಮೊದಲಾದವುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ‘ಅನ್ಯದೇವತೆ’ ಎಂದರೆ ತನ್ನ ಆತ್ಮವಾದ ವಾಸುದೇವನಿಗಿಂತ ಬೇರೆಯಾದ ದೇವತೆ. ‘ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಜನ್ಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಗಳಿಸಿದ ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರೂ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಸ್ವಭಾವ, ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ, ವಾಸನೆ ಎಂದೇ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Shankara’s examples of these desires are children, cattle, heaven and the like. ‘Other deities’ means deities other than Vasudeva, who is one’s own self. ‘Prakriti’ means the impressions gathered in earlier births. Madhva too takes prakriti to mean one’s nature, impressions and tendencies.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ಅನ್ಯದೇವತೆ’ಗೆ ಒಂದು ಮುಖ್ಯ ವಿಶೇಷಣ ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ‘ಕೇವಲ’ ಇಂದ್ರಾದಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳು. ಅಂದರೆ ಅವರನ್ನು ಭಗವಂತನ ಶರೀರವೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಯದೆ, ಅವರನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿಸಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಪೂಜೆ. ಈ ವಿಶೇಷಣದ ಮಹತ್ವ ಮುಂದಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
Ramanuja adds an important qualifier to ‘other deities’: Indra and the rest ‘alone’, that is, worship aimed at them only, without knowing them to be the Lord’s body. The weight of this qualifier becomes clear in the next verse.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯ ಮೊದಲು ಒಬ್ಬ ದೇವರು, ಮದುವೆಗೆ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ದೇವರು, ಆರೋಗ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬ ದೇವರು. ಬಯಕೆಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ದೇವರನ್ನು ಆರಿಸುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ಪರಿಚಿತ. ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದನ್ನು ಖಂಡಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಅದರ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ವರ್ಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
One god before an examination, another for a marriage, yet another for health. Many of us know the habit of choosing a god to suit the wish. This verse describes the mind behind it more than it condemns it.
ಬಯಕೆಯಿಂದ ವಿವೇಕ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಪೂಜೆಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೀಮಿತವಲ್ಲ. ಬೇಗ ಗುಣವಾಗಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಬಯಕೆಯಿಂದ ಅಡ್ಡದಾರಿ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಓಡುವುದೂ ಅದೇ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿ. ಬಯಕೆ ಬಲವಾದಾಗಲೇ ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣ ನಿಂತು ಯೋಚಿಸುವ ಅಗತ್ಯ ಹೆಚ್ಚು.
Losing discernment to desire is not limited to worship. Running after shortcut cures out of a wish to get well quickly comes from the same state of mind. It is when the desire is strongest that we most need to stop and think for a moment.
