Context and commentary on verse 9.7
The picture of Brahma’s day and night from the eighth chapter returns here, now with the words ‘mamika prakriti’, my prakriti. For Shankara it is the lower prakriti of the three gunas, which the seventh chapter called ‘apara’.
For Ramanuja this prakriti is the Lord’s body. It is called ‘tamas’, darkness, where there is no division of name and form. He gives Manu’s words ‘asid idam tamobhutam’, all this was as darkness, and the Subala Upanishad’s saying that darkness becomes one with the supreme deity. Madhva calls this account of dissolution an elaboration that shows the knowledge promised in the first verse.

We see the cycle of creation and dissolution on a small scale every day: day and night, the seasons, the seed and the tree.
The same goes on in our bodies. Skin cells and blood cells are renewed without pause. The awareness that ending makes room for the new can ease the fear of change a little.
