Context and commentary on verse 9.23
This verse says two things at once. Any worship done with faith finally reaches him. But it is ‘avidhipurvaka’, and on the meaning of that word the acharyas differ.
For Shankara ‘avidhi’ is ignorance: worshipping without knowing whom one is truly worshipping. Ramanuja expands this: Indra and the other deities are the Lord’s body, and their names too finally denote him. So the worship in fact reaches him. But they do not worship those deities knowing them as his body, as the Vedanta teaches, and that is the ‘avidhi’.
Madhva reads this verse as an answer to an objection arising from ‘aham kratuh’ (9.16): if every sacrifice is he, what becomes of sacrifices made to other deities? The answer lies here and in the next verse. The pages for 7.20 to 7.23 of the seventh chapter can be read alongside this one.

For life today
In our own homes one person worships Shiva, another the Devi, another the family deity. That worship done with faith is not wasted is plain in this verse. In the tenth chapter the Lord himself says ‘rudranam shankarash chasmi’ (10.23).
Yet the word ‘avidhi’ deserves attention. Good intention is not enough, right understanding is also needed. The right medicine taken in the wrong dose does not give its full benefit.
