Context and commentary on verse 9.29
A doubt may arise after the earlier verses: if grace is only for devotees, does the Lord too have likes and dislikes? Shankara gives the example of fire. Fire does not take away the cold of those who stay far off, it takes away the cold of those who come near. That is the nature of fire, and there is no partiality in it. Devotees dwell in him by their very nature, and he dwells in them by his. This does not mean he hates the others. Sridhara Swami adds the example of the wish-fulfilling tree.
For Ramanuja ‘the same’ means sameness in giving refuge. Among gods, animals, humans and plants, however high or low they stand in birth, form, nature or knowledge, he pushes no one away as low and draws no one specially close as high. But devotees who cannot sustain themselves without him, whoever they are, dwell in him at ease as though they were his equals. And he dwells in them as though they were greater than himself.
Madhva explains ‘they in me, I in them’ as ‘they are under my sway and I under theirs’, and quotes the Paingi Khila. Even in being under his sway, a knowing and willing bond differs from an unknowing one: that of Uddhava is of one kind, that of Shishupala of another.

For life today
There is a lesson for us in the example of fire. Grace is equally available to all. Only the step of drawing near is ours.
Good doctors and teachers are like this. The same care for everyone who comes to the door, attention that does not change with status. Yet a deeper bond naturally grows with those who follow the advice and keep coming back. That is not partiality.
