Context and commentary on verse 9.32
The two previous verses spoke of conduct. This one speaks of birth and social station. The main point of the verse is in its last line: those who take refuge in him reach the highest goal. But the commentators explain differently the relation between the word ‘papayonayah’ in the first line and the list that follows, ‘women, vaishyas, shudras’.
Shankara asks, ‘Who are those of sinful birth?’ and answers, ‘women, vaishyas, shudras’. So he reads the list as explaining that word. Ramanuja too, in the same way, names these three as papayonayah. Sridhara Swami separates them into distinct groups: ‘papayonayah’ are those of ‘low birth’ such as the antyajas, vaishyas are those engaged only in farming and the like, and women and shudras are those without access to Vedic study. In his view the point of the verse is this: devotion frees from samsara even those who lack the scriptural qualification. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
This verse and its commentaries may trouble today’s reader. The classical commentators wrote with the society of their own time in mind. Many readers today place the weight on the verse’s closing words: no one is left out, and all who take refuge reach the highest goal. Here we have given the meaning of the verse and the commentaries without altering them. It is not the work of this page to decide which of these readings is right.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
The closing words of this verse leave no one out. Its assurance is that birth, gender, occupation and access to education are no bar to that path.
Whether it is a satsang, a bhajan group, a temple or a hospital, making sure that everyone who comes receives the same welcome is one way of living this verse today.
