Context and commentary on verse 4.18
This is among the most riddling verses of the Gita, and the four commentators unpick it in four ways. We give each reading in its own terms.
For Shankara it corrects a mistaken view. Action belongs to the body and senses; the self is actionless. To one sitting in a moving boat, the trees on the bank seem to move backwards. In the same way the world lays the body’s action on the self. Seeing through this is ‘inaction in action’. On the other side, even in the thought ‘I am sitting at ease, doing nothing’, the ‘I’ as agent is hidden. Recognising that is ‘action in inaction’.
For Ramanuja ‘inaction’ means knowledge of the self. It is to see the very action one is doing as taking the form of knowledge, through contemplation of the self’s true nature, and to see that knowledge as contained within the action. Action and knowledge here are not two separate roads, but one within the other.
Madhva’s reading turns towards the Lord. While acting, to see ‘this is Vishnu’s action; I, his reflection, do nothing independently’ is inaction in action. In states such as sleep, where we do nothing, to see that the Supreme Lord is always at work in creation and the rest is action in inaction.
Sridhara Swami first gives a practical reading. Action done as worship of the Lord does not bind, since it leads to knowledge, and so it is as if not action. Omitting one’s enjoined duty produces fault and so binds, and so it is as if action. He then also offers a second sense, close to Shankara’s reading.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Shankara’s example of ‘I am sitting at ease’ strikes home. Running away from work is also a kind of work, and in it the ‘I’ is fully present.
On the other side, we have met people who do a great deal outwardly and yet stay quiet inside. Seeing them, this verse seems not merely a riddle but a state that is possible.
