Context and commentary on verse 4.35

‘Delusion like this again’ points straight back to Arjuna’s collapse in the first chapter. Sridhara Swami spells it out: the delusion over killing his kinsmen will not return. On the meaning of ‘in yourself and in me’ in the second line, the acharyas’ visions part once more.

For Shankara this is the oneness of the knower of the field and the Lord, well known in all the Upanishads: seeing all beings from Brahma down to a blade of grass in one’s own inner Self, and in that same Vasudeva, the Supreme Lord. Sridhara Swami also speaks of non-difference: seeing beings such as father and son, projected by one’s own ignorance, in oneself, and then oneself in the Supreme Self.

For Ramanuja it is sameness, not oneness. Freed from prakriti, all selves have the single form of knowledge and so are equal to one another. And the pure self resembles the Lord’s own nature. He cites ‘they have come to share my nature’ (14.2) and ‘he attains the supreme sameness’ (Mundaka) as support.

Madhva’s reading is brief: through that knowledge, because delusion is destroyed, one sees all beings in the Lord, who is the inner self of all.

Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

For life today

All three readings share one fruit: others do not remain strangers to us. As one Self, as equal selves, or as dwelling in one inner Lord, they come close to us.

The difference between seeing a patient as a ‘case’ and seeing a person like ourselves is a small shadow of this. When that vision comes, compassion is no longer an effort; it becomes natural.
