Context and commentary on verse 4.36
The verse’s image is the sea. Wrongdoing is an ocean; knowledge is the boat that crosses it. ‘Plava’ means a raft or boat.
Shankara adds a sharp remark here: for the seeker of liberation, even merit is here called sin, because it too binds. So the boat carries one across not only wrongdoing but the ocean of both merit and demerit.
Sridhara Swami gives the ‘sam’ in ‘santarishyasi’ its sense: you will cross over well, without strain. Ramanuja identifies the ocean as the sin accumulated from the past, and the boat as knowledge of the self.
Madhva sees three verses from this one as a group: praise of knowledge as the means.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
This is among the most hopeful verses of the Gita. ‘Even if you were the worst of all’ leaves no one outside. What we have done before does not close the road ahead.
This matters to those sunk in guilt. Owning a wrong is needed, but staying sunk in it is not crossing. The boat is there; one has to step into it.
