Context and commentary on verse 4.34
Having said knowledge is highest, the natural question is how to gain it. The answer has three words: prostration, questioning, service. This is the Gita’s clearest word on the relationship of teacher and student.
Shankara gives examples of the questioning: how does bondage come about, how liberation, what is knowledge, what is ignorance. He gives weight to the qualifier ‘who have seen the truth’. Some may have knowledge yet not have seen the truth. Only knowledge taught by those who have seen it bears fruit; that, he says, is the Lord’s view.
Sridhara Swami makes the questions more personal: ‘Where did this samsara of mine come from, and how does it end?’ For him the ‘wise’ are those who know the scriptures, and ‘those who have seen the truth’ are those with direct experience.
Ramanuja specifies what ‘that’ is: the knowledge of the self that Krishna himself taught from 2.17 to 2.39. While engaged in the action he taught, at the time when it ripens, one should receive the clear form of that knowledge from the wise. Noting the questioner’s intent, they will teach. Madhva says briefly that Arjuna is a knower even now, but delusion has come over him under the pressure of the moment.

It is worth noticing that the three words come together. A question without humility becomes an argument; humility without questions becomes blind belief. Service turns both into a real relationship.
Medical education largely works this way too. One who stands on the ward beside seniors, lends a hand in the work, and asks the right question at the right time learns what no book holds. Shankara’s stress on ‘those who have seen the truth’ is also a caution for those who teach.
