ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ 4.42 ಅರ್ಥ: ತಸ್ಮಾದಜ್ಞಾನಸಂಭೂತಂ

ಅಧ್ಯಾಯ ಒಂದು ಕರೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ: ‘ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ’, ಎದ್ದೇಳು. ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಪರಂತಪ’ ಎಂದು ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಇದು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಗದರಿಕೆ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂವರೆ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯಗಳ ಉಪದೇಶದ ನಂತರದ ಕರೆ.

The chapter ends with a call: ‘uttishtha’, arise. It recalls Krishna’s ‘uttishtha parantapa’ near the start of the second chapter. There it was a rebuke; here it is a call after two and a half chapters of teaching.

ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ಆತ್ಮನಃ’, ನಿನ್ನ, ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸಂಶಯ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ತನ್ನದೇ. ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರ ಸಂಶಯವನ್ನು ಬೇರೆ ಯಾರೋ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಲಾಗದು. ಜ್ಞಾನವೆಂಬ ಖಡ್ಗ ಶೋಕ ಮೋಹಾದಿ ದೋಷಗಳನ್ನು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸುವ ಸಮ್ಯಗ್ದರ್ಶನ. ‘ಯೋಗ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಉಪಾಯವಾದ ಕರ್ಮಾನುಷ್ಠಾನ, ಮತ್ತು ‘ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಈಗ ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಎದ್ದೇಳು.

Shankara notes the word ‘your own’. A doubt is always one’s own; no one else can cut another’s doubt. The sword of knowledge is the right vision that removes grief, delusion and the other faults. ‘Yoga’ means the performance of action that is the means to that vision, and ‘arise’ means arise now for battle.

ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಖಡ್ಗ ದೇಹ ಮತ್ತು ಆತ್ಮಗಳ ವಿವೇಕಜ್ಞಾನ, ಯೋಗ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮಜ್ಞಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಉಪಾಯವಾದ ಕರ್ಮಯೋಗ. ‘ಭಾರತ’ ಎಂಬ ಸಂಬೋಧನೆ ಯುದ್ಧ ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯನ ಸ್ವಧರ್ಮ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

For Sridhara Swami, the sword is the discriminating knowledge of body and self, and the yoga is karma yoga, the means to knowledge of the Supreme Self. The address ‘Bharata’ is a reminder that battle is the kshatriya’s own duty.

ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಓದು ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ: ಅನಾದಿ ಅಜ್ಞಾನದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ, ಆತ್ಮದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇರುವ ಸಂಶಯವನ್ನು ನಾನು ಉಪದೇಶಿಸಿದ ಆತ್ಮಜ್ಞಾನವೆಂಬ ಖಡ್ಗದಿಂದ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿ, ನಾನು ಉಪದೇಶಿಸಿದ ಕರ್ಮಯೋಗವನ್ನು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸು, ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಎದ್ದೇಳು. ಮೂವರೂ ಒಪ್ಪುವ ಒಂದು ಅಂಶ: ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಯೋಗ ಕರ್ಮದಿಂದ ಹೊರಗೆ ಓಡುವುದಲ್ಲ, ಕರ್ಮದೊಳಗೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದು.

Ramanuja’s reading is brief and clear: cut the doubt about the self, born of beginningless ignorance, with the sword of self-knowledge that I have taught, take your stand in the karma yoga I have taught, and arise for it. One point all three agree on: the yoga here is not escape from action but standing within it.

ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಸಂಶಯ ‘ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ’ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ನಿಖರ. ಅನೇಕ ಬಾರಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಅನಿಶ್ಚಿತತೆ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯದ್ದಲ್ಲ, ಭಾವನೆಯದ್ದು. ತರ್ಕ ಗೊತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಹಿಂಜರಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.

That doubt is lodged ‘in the heart’ is precisely put. Often our uncertainty is not of the intellect but of feeling. We know the reasoning, and still the mind holds back.

ಅಂಥ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಬೇಕಾದ ಮಾತು ಈ ಕೊನೆಯ ಪದ: ಎದ್ದೇಳು. ಎಲ್ಲ ಉತ್ತರಗಳೂ ಸಿಗುವವರೆಗೆ ಕಾಯುವುದಲ್ಲ. ತಿಳಿದಷ್ಟನ್ನು ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಮುಂದಿನ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಇಡುವುದು.

In such a moment, the word to hear is this last one: arise. Not to wait until every answer is in, but to take the next step on the basis of what one understands.
