About this verse
In the story Kali enters Nala and makes him lose his kingdom at dice. In the forest the serpent Karkotaka bites Nala. The venom torments the Kali within him and disguises Nala’s form. Later, when Nala learns the secret science of dice from King Rituparna, Kali leaves him.
So the serpent who helped Nala, the wife who waited for him and the king who taught him are all remembered in this verse along with Nala himself.

For life today
In the story Kali pulls a good king towards gambling from within. So Kali can also be read as a sign of the addiction that pulls a person off course. Nala, who lost everything to it and rose again, is still a story of hope for anyone caught in such a struggle.
