Context and commentary on verse 7.13
If everything comes from the Lord, why do people not recognise him? This verse answers that question. Shankara sees in it the Lord’s ‘anukrosha’, his compassion for the world. Attachment, aversion and delusion, which are modifications of the gunas, cover up discernment, he explains.
Ramanuja points to an irony. Though the Lord is there, infinite bliss and ever the same, it is things made of the gunas, perishing in a moment, that seem enjoyable to people. The next verse, he adds, gives the reason for this state of affairs.
Madhva identifies another delusion. Seeing their own bodies made of the gunas, people assume the Lord’s body must be the same. To show that he is beyond the gunas he quotes the Shvetashvatara’s ‘kevalo nirgunash cha’.

The three gunas are sometimes compared to tinted glasses. We forget that the glasses are on our eyes, and then take their tint to be the colour of the world.
When we are very tired everything looks hard, and after a night’s sleep the same problem looks smaller. Waiting until morning instead of making big decisions on an exhausted night is one small lesson we can take from this verse.
