Context and commentary on verse 8.5
This begins the answer to Arjuna’s seventh question. The word ‘madbhava’, my being, has different meanings among the acharyas. For Shankara it is the ‘vaishnava tattva’, the very nature of the Supreme Lord.
For Ramanuja ‘madbhava’ means my nature: whatever one remembers at the end, and in whatever way, one takes on a form like it. He gives the example of Bharata: the royal sage who thought of a deer at the moment of death became a deer in his next birth.
For Madhva ‘madbhava’ is existence in the Lord, a state of boundless bliss without sorrow. He cites the Mokshadharma: the goal of the liberated is Brahman.

For life today
Some read this verse with fear: what if the name of God does not come to mind at the last moment? Families of those who died unconscious in an ICU, under the effect of medicines, sometimes carry this question and grieve over it.
The verses that follow answer this: remembrance at the end comes from what has been cultivated throughout life. For such families, remembering how their loved one lived may bring more comfort than worrying over the final moment.
