Context and commentary on verse 8.17
Here is the reason for the last verse’s ‘even from Brahma’s realm one returns’: Brahma the creator also has days and nights. Ramanuja makes clear that ‘yuga’ here means a set of four ages, Krita, Treta, Dvapara and Kali together. A thousand such sets make one day of the four-faced Brahma.
For Shankara the Brahma here is Prajapati, Virat. Those who know the reckoning of time understand that these worlds are bounded by time and so involve a return.
Madhva’s reading goes in another direction. For him ‘thousand’ means many, and the ‘Brahma’ here is the Supreme Brahman. What is described is the great dissolution at the end of the two halves of Brahma’s life, the night of Mahavishnu. This account of dissolution, he explains, is given to show the Lord’s power called the unmanifest and to establish that those who reach him do not return. He reads verses eighteen and nineteen together with this one.

For life today
Against the measures of time in this verse, our seventy or eighty years are not even the blink of an eye. When we recall that present-day astronomy puts the age of the universe at more than thirteen billion years, the ancients’ vast sense of time is striking.
Before so vast a picture, the small irritations of our day shrink by themselves. But the same picture also asks a question: what are we using so short a time for?
