Context and commentary on verse 8.9
This is one of the Gita’s verses in the longer trishtubh metre. Eight epithets of the Lord, the object of meditation, follow one after another. This verse and the next make a single sentence.
Shankara opens each epithet. ‘Kavi’ is the all-knowing one who sees everything. ‘Dhata’ is the one who distributes the fruits of action to beings. ‘Achintyarupa’ means that though he has a form, no one can conceive it. ‘Adityavarna’ is the light of eternal consciousness, like the sun, and ‘tamasah parastat’ is beyond the darkness of ignorance.
Ramanuja reads this meditation as the worship of those who seek prosperity. ‘Subtler than the atom’ means subtler even than the individual self, and ‘adityavarna’ is his divine form, not made of prakriti and unique to him. For Madhva ‘tamas’ is the unmanifest, and the Lord is beyond it. ‘Dhata’ is the one who upholds and nourishes.

For life today
Two epithets of this verse seem to contradict each other: subtler than the atom, and upholder of all. The great in the small, the small in the great.
The body gives the same feeling. A fertilised egg, too small to be seen easily, already holds the information to build the whole body. Before such a wonder the word ‘achintyarupa’, beyond conceiving, feels entirely natural.
