Context and commentary on verse 8.18
This verse speaks of creation and dissolution in the image of waking and sleep. For Shankara the ‘unmanifest’ is the sleeping state of Prajapati. When he wakes, all beings, moving and unmoving, become manifest; when he sleeps, they are withdrawn into it.
For Ramanuja the unmanifest here is a particular state of the body of the four-faced Brahma. The bodies, senses, objects and places of enjoyment of the three worlds arise from it and dissolve back into it.
Madhva reads verses seventeen to nineteen together. The gist of his explanation is on the page for the seventeenth verse.

For life today
Every night we go through a small dissolution. In deep sleep there is no name, no position, no worry; in the morning they all rise again.
Sleep is the dissolution that clears the day’s fatigue. Lack of sleep can affect blood pressure, blood sugar and mood alike. Respecting this small daily dissolution is one of the basic lessons of health.
