adhibhūtaṃ kṣaro bhāvaḥ puruṣaścādhidaivatam|
adhiyajño’hamevātra dehe dehabhṛtāṃ vara || 4 ||

  • ಅಧಿಭೂತಂ ಕ್ಷರಃ ಭಾವಃ (अधिभूतं क्षरः भावः, adhibhūtaṃ kṣaraḥ bhāvaḥ) = ಅಧಿಭೂತ ನಾಶವಾಗುವ ವಸ್ತು (adhibhuta is the perishable existence)
  • ಪುರುಷಃ ಚ ಅಧಿದೈವತಮ್ (पुरुषः च अधिदैवतम्, puruṣaḥ ca adhidaivatam) = ಪುರುಷನು ಅಧಿದೈವ (and the Purusha is the adhidaiva)
(O best of the embodied)
(I alone am the adhiyajna here in the body)

O best of the embodied, the perishable is the adhibhuta, and the Purusha is the adhidaiva. I myself am the adhiyajna here in this body.

Context and commentary on verse 8.4

The answer to the other three words. Here too the acharyas differ, especially over who the ‘Purusha’ of the adhidaiva is.

For Shankara the adhibhuta is whatever is born and perishable, existing in relation to beings. The Purusha of the adhidaiva is Hiranyagarbha within the orb of the sun, who favours the senses of all beings. The adhiyajna is Vishnu, the deity of all sacrifices, as the scripture says, ‘yajno vai vishnuh’. Since sacrifice is performed by the body, he is in the body.

For Ramanuja the adhibhuta is the special, perishable enjoyments such as sound and touch that seekers of prosperity want to gain. The Purusha of the adhidaiva is the state of enjoying pleasures above those of Indra, Prajapati and the other gods. The adhiyajna is the Lord himself, worshipped through sacrifices, standing as the self within Indra and the others, who are his body.

For Madhva the adhibhuta is the perishable products related to embodied jivas. He adds that even the unmanifest undergoes a kind of destruction, as change of state. The Purusha of the adhidaiva is the jiva who is lord of all the gods, Sankarshana or Brahma. The adhiyajna is the Lord, the enjoyer of all sacrifices.

For life today

‘I am the adhiyajna here in this body’ offers a way of seeing the body as a hall of sacrifice. The verse can be understood to mean that eating, breathing and working are all offerings made there.

That view lends a certain dignity to caring for the body too. Sleep, food, exercise and timely check-ups can also be seen as the work of keeping that hall of sacrifice in good repair.
