Context and commentary on verse 8.19
Two words in this verse stand out: ‘sa evayam’, this same one, and ‘avashah’, helplessly. Shankara gives the reason for the first: the very beings of the previous cycle return, not others. Otherwise one would reap the fruit of deeds not done and lose the fruit of deeds done, and the teaching of bondage and liberation would lose its meaning.
‘Avasha’ means without freedom, driven by the force of karma that springs from afflictions such as ignorance. Shankara says that awakening dispassion towards samsara is also a purpose of this verse.
Ramanuja extends this to a still greater dissolution. At the end of Brahma’s hundred years, all worlds up to Brahma’s realm, and Brahma too, dissolve into the Lord in order, earth into water, water into fire, and so on. So the return of those who have gone the way of prosperity is unavoidable, while for those who have reached the Lord the question does not arise.

For life today
The word ‘avashah’, helplessly, is familiar to us too. Many know the experience of returning to the same habit, the same quarrel, the same worry, against their own wish. As if caught in a small wheel.
Recognising the wheel is the first step out of it. Writing down ‘when, and in what situation, do I go back there’ is a simple method used in the treatment of addiction too.
