Context and commentary on verse 8.12
This verse describes the yogic procedure of the tenth verse in more detail. The ‘gates’ are the senses, the doors through which the outer world comes in. The fifth chapter called the body a city of nine gates (5.13).
Shankara lays out the steps: withdrawing the senses from their objects, holding the mind motionless in the lotus of the heart, and raising the life-breath to the crown through the channel that rises from the heart. For Ramanuja the mind is held in the Lord, the Imperishable, who dwells in the lotus of the heart. In his view this worship belongs to those who seek the self freed from prakriti.
Madhva gives the reason for closing all the gates: if the jiva leaves by a way other than the channel of Brahman, it reaches some place other than liberation. For him ‘hridi’, in the heart, means in Narayana. For when the breath is in the head the mind cannot be in the bodily heart; where the breath is, there the mind is too.

For life today
The idea of closing the doors of the senses gains new meaning in today’s life. All day long a wave of screens, news and messages keeps rushing in through our eyes and ears.
Sleep medicine advises keeping away from screens for a while before going to bed, as it helps sleep. It could be called a small, everyday form of the yogi’s ‘closing of all the gates’.
