Context and commentary on verse 8.6
Shankara introduces this verse by saying that the rule of the previous verse is not limited to the Lord; it is a general rule. The final thought is the cause of the next body.
The key phrase of the verse comes at the end of the second line: ‘sada tadbhavabhavitah’. Ramanuja says it plainly: the final thought arises only about what has been practised again and again before.
Madhva takes up a worry directly: is it possible to remember amid the pain of death? His answer lies in this same phrase: the means to remembrance at the end is a mind deeply steeped in that state throughout life. ‘Bhavana’, he explains, means ‘ativasana’, a strong fragrance that has soaked into the mind.

For life today
This verse sees the final moment as the outcome of a whole life. Whatever we think about most, day after day, becomes the lasting colour of our minds.
In elders with dementia, recent memories are lost first. But old songs and prayers often remain for a long time. It is an everyday sign that what is repeated from childhood sinks deep into the mind.
