Context and commentary on verse 8.8
This answers how ‘remember me at all times’ is possible: through practice. In the sixth chapter the answer to the restless mind was ‘practice and dispassion’ (6.35). The same word returns here.
Shankara describes practice exactly: letting the same kind of awareness flow again and again towards a single object, with no other thought coming in between. For him the ‘divine Person’ is the one who dwells in the orb of the sun.
Ramanuja separates practice from yoga. Practice is turning the object of worship over in the mind at all times without disturbing one’s daily duties; yoga is the worship done every day at its set time. For Madhva, ‘the practice itself is the yoga’. ‘Purusha’ is the full one who dwells in the cities that are all bodies, and ‘divya’ is the one whose play is creation and the rest.

A musician’s fingers and a surgeon’s hands are both shaped by thousands of hours of practice. In a moment of stress we act more by habit than by deliberate thought.
That is why emergency training has people practise steps such as CPR again and again. This verse applies the same principle to the greatest moment of life.
