ಹೆಸರು ಕೇಳಿದರೆ ಸಾಕು ಮನಸ್ಸು ಶುದ್ಧವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಪರಂಪರೆ ಹೇಳುವ ನಾಲ್ವರನ್ನು ನೆನೆಯುವ ಬೆಳಗಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದು: ನಳ, ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರ, ಸೀತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕೃಷ್ಣ.
ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕ ಎಂದರೆ ಯಾರ ಕೀರ್ತಿಯೇ ಪುಣ್ಯವನ್ನು ತರುತ್ತದೋ ಅವರು. ಈ ನಾಲ್ವರೂ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದವರು ಎಂಬುದು ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಸಂಗತಿ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕೋ ನಲೋ ರಾಜಾ ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕೋ ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರಃ ।
ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕಾ ಚ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕೋ ಜನಾರ್ದನಃ ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
पुण्यश्लोको नलो राजा पुण्यश्लोको युधिष्ठिरः ।
पुण्यश्लोका च वैदेही पुण्यश्लोको जनार्दनः ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕಃ (पुण्यश्लोकः, puṇyaślokaḥ) = ಪುಣ್ಯ ತರುವ ಕೀರ್ತಿಯುಳ್ಳವನು (one whose fame brings merit)
- ನಲಃ ರಾಜಾ (नलः राजा, nalaḥ rājā) = ನಿಷಧ ದೇಶದ ರಾಜ ನಳ (King Nala of Nishadha)
- ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರಃ (युधिष्ठिरः, yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) = ಪಾಂಡವರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿರಿಯನಾದ ಧರ್ಮರಾಜ (Yudhishthira, eldest of the Pandavas)
- ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕಾ ಚ ವೈದೇಹೀ (पुण्यश्लोका च वैदेही, puṇyaślokā ca vaidehī) = ವಿದೇಹ ರಾಜನ ಮಗಳು ಸೀತೆಯೂ ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕೆ (and Sita, princess of Videha, is also of holy fame)
- ಜನಾರ್ದನಃ (जनार्दनः, janārdanaḥ) = ಕೃಷ್ಣ (Janardana, Krishna)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ರಾಜ ನಳನು ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕ. ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನು ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕ. ವಿದೇಹದ ರಾಜಕುಮಾರಿ ಸೀತೆಯೂ ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕೆ. ಜನಾರ್ದನನಾದ ಕೃಷ್ಣನೂ ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಲೋಕ. ಇವರ ಹೆಸರು ಹೇಳುವುದೇ ಪುಣ್ಯ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
King Nala is of holy fame. Yudhishthira is of holy fame. Sita, the princess of Videha, is of holy fame, and so is Janardana, Krishna. To say their names is itself a blessing.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ನಳ ದಮಯಂತಿಯರ ಕಥೆ ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ವನಪರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೂಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನಿಗೆ ಸಮಾಧಾನ ಹೇಳಲು ಬೃಹದಶ್ವ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಈ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಮೊದಲ ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಒಂದೇ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾರೆ.
The story of Nala and Damayanti is told in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. The sage Brihadashva narrates it to console Yudhishthira, who has lost his kingdom at dice and is living in the forest. So the first two names in this verse meet in one story.
ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಇದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಕರ್ಕೋಟಕಸ್ಯ ನಾಗಸ್ಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನೂ ಹೇಳುವ ರೂಢಿ ಇದೆ. ಅದೂ ನಳನ ಕಥೆಗೇ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ್ದು, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇರೆ ಪುಟವಿದೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನೇ ಕಾಣದವರನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ನೆನೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ರಾಜ್ಯ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡವರು, ಕಾಡಿಗೆ ಹೋದವರು, ಅಪವಾದ ಹೊತ್ತವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲೂ ಸರಿಯಾದ ನಡೆ ಬಿಡದವರ ಹೆಸರು ದಿನದ ಮೊದಲ ಮಾತಾಗುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಆದರ್ಶ.
This verse does not remember people who never suffered. Here are those who lost kingdoms, went to the forest and bore slander. Letting the names of those who held to right conduct through hardship be the first words of the day is a good ideal.
