Context and commentary on verse 8.24
This is the ‘path of light’, the devayana, the way of the gods described in the Upanishads. The Chandogya’s teaching of the five fires describes it in detail, and Ramanuja quotes it. Madhva glosses ‘jyotih’ as ‘archis’, flame, and says all these are presiding deities.
For Shankara fire, light, day, the bright fortnight and the northern course are all presiding deities who lead the soul along the path. Because deities of time are most numerous among them, the last verse called it ‘time’, just as a grove with mostly mango trees is called a mango grove. Those who go this way are worshippers of Brahman, who are liberated in stages. For those established in right vision who are liberated here itself there is neither going nor coming; the scripture says ‘his breaths do not depart’.
The fourth chapter of the Brahma Sutras also discusses this question, and concludes that even a knower who dies at night or during dakshinayana does not lose the fruit of his knowledge. Many commentators understand this verse in the light of those sutras.

For life today
A painful question troubles some families: ‘will one who died in dakshinayana, at night, reach a good end?’ This worry lays another weight on top of grief.
The acharyas understand the ‘time’ here as the deities of a path. The Brahma Sutras too say that death at night or in dakshinayana is no obstacle for the knower. The weight of the whole chapter rests on what is cultivated through life. Families need not blame themselves over the hour of a death.
