Context and commentary on verse 10.2
Shankara says the word ‘prabhava’ can mean two things: ‘prabhava’ as might, the surpassing power of the sovereign, or ‘prabhavana’, birth. Since he is the source of the gods and the sages, they cannot know his beginning. This is natural: a son cannot have witnessed his father’s birth.
Ramanuja gives the reason differently: the knowledge of the gods and sages was itself given by him in keeping with their merit, and so it is limited. Madhva also reads ‘prabhava’ as the origin of the world, and says the hint here is that he himself has no birth at all. For this he quotes the Rigveda’s Nasadiya hymn, ‘ko addha veda’, who truly knows where this creation came from. According to Sridhara Swami, no one knows him without his grace.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
The words ‘even the gods do not know’ teach humility. However much one knows, there is always more left to know.
Science knows the same experience. When one question is answered, ten new ones arise. Experienced doctors do not hesitate to say, ‘I do not know, let us ask someone else.’
