Context and commentary on verse 10.31
The word ‘pavatam’ has two senses: for Shankara purifiers, for Ramanuja things whose nature is to move. Sridhara Swami gives both. For Shankara ‘Rama’ is Rama the son of Dasharatha, and Sridhara Swami also allows that it may be Parashurama. For Sridhara Swami the makara is the great water creature called timingila. Jahnavi means the daughter of the sage Jahnu, the Ganga.
Ramanuja notes a subtle point here: since Rama is himself an incarnation of the Lord, the glory meant here is Rama’s bearing of weapons, and no other sense fits. Madhva explains the name ‘Rama’: the one whose nature is bliss, who is full, in whom the world delights. For this he quotes the Shandilya branch.

For life today
Wind and river both purify. Today both are in danger from pollution. Keeping them clean is work as sacred as worship.
Polluted air raises the risk of breathing illnesses and heart disease, and polluted water spreads infections such as diarrhoea. Not burning rubbish and not throwing waste into rivers are small steps, but they too are service.
