Context and commentary on verse 10.5

The list of the previous verse ends here. Shankara’s definitions: ‘ahimsa’ is causing no pain to beings, ‘tushti’ the sense of ‘enough’ in what one has gained, ‘dana’ sharing according to one’s means, ‘yashas’ fame that comes from dharma, ‘ayashas’ ill fame that comes from adharma. These states come to beings from him, each according to its own karma.

Ramanuja explains the two verses together and says that all these movements of the mind, which lead beings to act or to hold back, depend on his will. Madhva too explains ‘tushti’ as ‘alambuddhi’, the sense of ‘enough’. For Sridhara Swami ‘samata’ is freedom from attachment and aversion, an even mind towards friend and foe, and ‘dana’ is giving what was earned honestly to the deserving. In his view these states and their opposites alike come from him.

For life today

The meaning the acharyas give to ‘tushti’, the sense of ‘enough’, is much needed in life today. A new phone, a bigger house, a higher salary: this race has no end.

We see that those who have learned to say ‘enough’ live with more peace. It helps with giving too: one who feels he has enough finds it easy to share.
