Context and commentary on verse 10.9
Shankara gives two meanings for ‘madgataprana’: those who have drawn their senses, the eyes and the rest, back into him, or those whose very life is placed in him. Ramanuja takes the second more deeply still: those who cannot hold themselves together without him.
The special gift of this verse is its picture of satsang. Ramanuja unfolds it beautifully: they tell one another the qualities of his that they have experienced and describe his divine deeds. The speakers are content in the very speaking, and the listeners rejoice in the very hearing. ‘Tushyanti’ belongs to the speakers, ‘ramanti’ to the listeners. For Sridhara Swami ‘bodhayantah’ means teaching with sound reasoning from scripture and the other means of knowledge.
