Context and commentary on verse 10.6
Here begins the first example of the glories: the sages and Manus who carry creation forward. Shankara, Ramanuja and Sridhara Swami say the seven great sages are Bhrigu and the others. Madhva gives the list from the Mokshadharma section of the Mahabharata: Marichi, Atri, Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu and Vasishtha.
The readings part on who the ‘four’ are. For Shankara and Ramanuja they are the four Manus called Savarni. For Madhva they are the first four Manus, Svayambhuva and the others, since it would not fit to say that the present creatures came from Manus yet to come. Sridhara Swami separates the ‘four’ from the Manus and reads them as the four great sages Sanaka and the others, the Manus being Svayambhuva and the rest.
Ramanuja gives the word ‘madbhavah’ a lovely sense: my disposition is their disposition, that is, they act in keeping with my will. It is not the work of this page to decide which of these readings is right.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
The memory of these sages lives on in the gotra names of many of us. Every family and every tradition has a source.
Remembering the gifts of those who came before us is a form of gratitude. Listening to the stories of the elders at home and writing them down is a small gift we can pass on to the next generation.
