Context and commentary on verse 10.30
Among the daityas, of the line of Diti, I am Prahlada. This is among the most touching words of the chapter: the child devotee born in a daitya family is himself his glory. One may call it a living example of the ninth chapter’s ‘samo ‘ham sarvabhuteshu’ (9.29). Vainateya means Garuda, the son of Vinata. For Shankara ‘mrigendra’ is the lion or the tiger.
‘Kalah kalayatam aham’. For Shankara ‘kalayatam’ means those who count, and among them he is Time. Sridhara Swami gives another sense too: among those who subdue, Time. Ramanuja’s sense is grave: among those who calculate to bring harm, Time in the form of death. It foreshadows the eleventh chapter’s ‘kalo ‘smi lokakshayakrit’ (11.32). Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Our children know the story of Prahlada. He is a sign that a child born into a harsh home can still take the path of goodness.
Child psychology tells us that for a child growing up in hard surroundings, one caring teacher, neighbour or relative can be a great protection. Narada was that for Prahlada. We too can be that for someone.
