ಇದೊಂದು ಭಾಗವತ ಪುರಾಣದ ಗಜೇಂದ್ರ ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಸ್ತುತಿಯ ಮೊದಲ ಶ್ಲೋಕ.
ಮೊಸಳೆಯ ಹಿಡಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿದ ಆನೆ ತನ್ನ ಬಲ ಸಾಲದೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದು ಪರಮಪುರುಷನಿಗೆ ಶರಣಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಶರಣಾಗತಿಯ ಮೊದಲ ನುಡಿಯೇ ಈ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಓಂ ನಮೋ ಭಗವತೇ ತಸ್ಮೈ
ಯತ ಏತಚ್ಚಿದಾತ್ಮಕಮ್ ।
ಪುರುಷಾಯಾದಿಬೀಜಾಯ
ಪರೇಶಾಯಾಭಿಧೀಮಹಿ ॥

यत एतच्चिदात्मकम् ।
पुरुषायादिबीजाय
परेशायाभिधीमहि ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಓಂ (ॐ, oṃ) = ಪ್ರಣವ, ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನ ನಾದರೂಪ (the sacred syllable, the sound-form of the Supreme)
- ನಮಃ (नमः, namaḥ) = ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ (salutation)
- ಭಗವತೇ (भगवते, bhagavate) = ಭಗವಂತನಿಗೆ, ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಾದಿ ಷಡ್ಗುಣಗಳುಳ್ಳವನಿಗೆ (to the Lord, who is full of divine glories)
- ತಸ್ಮೈ (तस्मै, tasmai) = ಆ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನಿಗೆ (to that One)
- ಯತಃ (यतः, yataḥ) = ಯಾರಿಂದ (from whom, by whom)
- ಏತತ್ (एतत्, etat) = ಇದು, ಈ ಜಗತ್ತು (this, this world)
- ಚಿದಾತ್ಮಕಂ (चिदात्मकं, cidātmakaṃ) = ಚೈತನ್ಯಮಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಅರಿವಿನ ಸ್ವರೂಪ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ (becomes full of consciousness)
- ಪುರುಷಾಯ (पुरुषाय, puruṣāya) = ಪರಮಪುರುಷನಿಗೆ (to the Supreme Person)
- ಆದಿಬೀಜಾಯ (आदिबीजाय, ādibījāya) = ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕೂ ಮೊದಲ ಬೀಜವಾದವನಿಗೆ (to the primal seed of all)
- ಪರೇಶಾಯ (परेशाय, pareśāya) = ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ ಮೇಲಿನ ಒಡೆಯನಿಗೆ (to the Lord above all)
- ಅಭಿಧೀಮಹಿ (अभिधीमहि, abhidhīmahi) = ಧ್ಯಾನಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ (we meditate)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಓಂ ಕಾರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆ ಭಗವಂತನಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. ಅವನಿಂದಲೇ ಈ ಜಗತ್ತು ಚೈತನ್ಯ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವನು ಪರಮಪುರುಷ. ಎಲ್ಲದಕ್ಕೂ ಮೊದಲ ಬೀಜ ಅವನು. ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ ಮೇಲಿನ ಆ ಒಡೆಯನನ್ನು ನಾವು ಧ್ಯಾನಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Om. Salutation to that Lord, by whom this world is filled with consciousness. He is the Supreme Person and the primal seed of all. On that Lord above all, we meditate.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಇದು ಭಾಗವತ ಪುರಾಣದ ಎಂಟನೇ ಸ್ಕಂಧದ ಮೂರನೇ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದ ಎರಡನೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕ. ಗಜೇಂದ್ರ ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆನೆ ಹೇಳುವ ಸ್ತುತಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಆರಂಭ. ಈ ಕಥೆಯ ಪಾರಾಯಣ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಮೊದಲು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.
This is verse 2 of chapter 3 in canto 8 of the Bhagavata Purana. The elephant’s prayer in the Gajendra Moksha story begins here. In the tradition of reciting this story, it is said first.
ಚಿದಾತ್ಮಕಂ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ರೀತಿ ಅರ್ಥ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಭಗವಂತನ ಸನ್ನಿಧಿಯಿಂದ ಈ ದೇಹ ಮತ್ತು ಜಗತ್ತು ಚೈತನ್ಯ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
Commentators explain chidatmakam in different ways. Here we take it to mean that this body and world receive consciousness from the Lord’s presence.
ಅಭಿಧೀಮಹಿ ಎಂದರೆ ನಾವು ಧ್ಯಾನಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಗಾಯತ್ರಿ ಮಂತ್ರದ ಧೀಮಹಿ ಪದವೂ ಇದೇ ಧಾತುವಿನದು. ಕೆಲವು ಪಾಠಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಓಂ ಬದಲು ಅದರ ದೇವನಾಗರಿ ರೂಪ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಕೇವಲ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ.
Abhidhimahi means we meditate. The word dhimahi in the Gayatri mantra comes from the same root. Some printings write the Om sign in its Devanagari form. That is only a difference of script.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಬಲ ಸಾಲದು ಎಂದು ಅನಿಸುವಾಗ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಗಾಬರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಸಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಮೆಲ್ಲನೆ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡರೆ ಮನಸ್ಸು ನಿಲ್ಲಲು ನೆರವಾಗಬಲ್ಲದು. ಆದರೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೆ ಬದಲಿಯಲ್ಲ. ಕಾಯಿಲೆ ಇದ್ದರೆ ವೈದ್ಯರ ಸಲಹೆ ಮತ್ತು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸೋಣ.
When our own strength seems not enough, the mind grows frightened. Saying these lines quietly can help the mind settle. But prayer does not replace medical treatment. If we are ill, let us keep following a doctor’s advice and treatment.
ಸಹಾಯ ಕೇಳುವುದು ಸೋಲಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಈ ಕಥೆ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಹತ್ತಿರದವರ ಬಳಿ ಮನಬಿಚ್ಚಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಲು ಮತ್ತು ನೆರವು ಕೇಳಲು ಹಿಂಜರಿಯದಿರೋಣ. ಯಾವ ಫಲವೂ ಖಚಿತವೆಂದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
This story reminds us that asking for help is not defeat. Let us not hesitate to speak openly to those close to us and ask for support. The verse does not promise any outcome.
